USA Hockey recently announced its rosters for the U.S. Under-18 and Under-17 Men’s Select Teams that will compete in international competitions this August, as well as the roster for the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp (NJEC). The two select team rosters feature 11 Minnesotans and another 13 will participate in the NJEC with at least four expected to make the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team.
The U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select team will head to Red Deer, Alberta on July 31-August 6 for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Five Minnesota natives were selected for the team following their performances at the USA Hockey Boys Select 17 National Player Development Camp: Joe Gramer (Moorhead), Ty Hanson (Hermantown), Will Ingemann (Wayzata), Hampton Slukynsky (Warroad) and William Whitelaw (Rosemount).
The U.S. will compete alongside Czechia, Finland and Germany in Group B at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Canada, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland will compete in Group A. For more details on the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the full roster for the U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select team, click here.
Six Minnesota natives have been chosen for the 2022 U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team that will compete Aug. 9-13 at the Athletix Under-17 Five Nations Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo. Caleb Heil (Chaska), Carson Pilgrim (Warroad), Michael Risteau (Lakeville), John Stout (Minnetonka), Dallas Vieau (Hermantown) and Will Zellers (Maple Grove) will all have the opportunity to represent the U.S. on the international stage for the first time.
Each of the players were selected following their performance at USA Hockey’s Boys Select 16 Player Development Camp, which was held in Amherst, New York this past week.
The U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select Team will also have several Minnesota natives on its staff. Head coach Dan Jablonic grew up in Blaine, Minn. and played for Minnesota Duluth in college. Nick Oliver, who will serve as assistant coach, is a Roseau, Minn. native and has spent the past four years coaching at his alma mater, St. Cloud State. In addition, long time high school coach, CCM High Performance Boys 14 Development Director and District 8 Coach-in-Chief, Bill McClellan will serve as a team leader.

Several Minnesotans are also expected to be selected for the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team from the U.S. NJEC. The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship (WJC) was canceled in January and rescheduled for August 9-20 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta. The U.S. NJEC will be held July 24-August 3 and will be designed to select the 2022 U.S. team as well as preparing for the 2023 WJC, which will be held Dec. 26, 2022-Jan. 5, 2023.
A total of 13 Minnesotans were invited to the U.S. NJEC including Brock Faber (Maple Grove), Wyatt Kaiser (Andover), Chaz Lucius* (Grant) and Jack Peart (Grand Rapids), who were members of the original 2022 U.S. National Junior Team. Faber served as an assistant captain and is expected to again play a key leadership role, especially after playing on the 2022 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team.
The other nine Minnesotans include Blake Biondi (Hermantown), Jackson Blake (Eden Prairie), Ryan Chesley (Mahtomedi), Justin Janicke (Maple Grove), Connor Kelley (Maple Grove), Connor Kurth (Elk River), Luke Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie), Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska) and Charlie Stramel (Rosemount).
