Players reminded that having fun is camp's top priority; opening games offer high drama

Opening day of the High Performance 14 Summer Development Camp at St. Cloud State University included a player summit during which Program Director Jacob Mars welcomed the players and, with help from Development Director Bill McClellan, laid out the rules for the week, No. 1 of which is to have F-U-N.

All six teams hit the ice shortly after the player summit, with practices and games beginning in earnest.

White 7, Gold 4

The opening game of camp offered plenty of fireworks, as 11 different players scored goals in a wild contest that saw Gold score four unanswered goals in the first half only to see White score six straight times in the second half.

Scoring was incredibly balanced for both teams, but White's Mason Jenson (Rogers) did register a goal and two assists.

No player scored more than one goal or had multiple points for Gold.

Sky Blue 6, Royal Blue 5 SO

Owen Renslow (Marshall) scored twice in regulation and Gavin Katz (Mahtomedi) had the deciding goal in the shootout as Sky Blue slipped past Royal Blue.

Katz also had three assists for Sky Blue, which held leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in the first half.

Henri Ament (Chaska/Chanhassen) had two assists for Royal Blue, which outscored Sky Blue 3-1 in the second half.

Green 4, Red 3

Weston Schenkelberg (Hopkins) and Kent Sauer Jr. (Andover) scored in the second half as Green rallied from a 3-2 deficit to beat Red.

Sauer Jr. finished with two goals, and Schenkelberg had a goal and an assist for Green, which allowed just six second-half shots.

An unassisted goal by Brent Solomon (Champlin Park) with 1:38 left in the first half put Red ahead 3-2.
