Section 8A/AA skates to a shutout in consolation final

Section 8A/AA Sky Blue scored a trio of goals in each half with five different scorers – four of them from Warroad – en route to a 6-0 shutout in Sunday’s consolation final. Mikayla Curtis (Warroad) scored twice and three players recorded a goal and assist each.

Kate Johnson (Warroad) gave her team a 1-0 lead 2 minutes, 8 seconds into the game with her third goal of the weekend. Jayden Breiland (Thief River Falls) had the assist on the play. The next two goals came from the tandem of Olivia Dronen (Moorhead) and Tayla Hendrickson (Warroad). Dronen scored early in the half with a Hendrickson assist, and then Hendrickson scored from Dronen with 33 seconds left in the first half for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Curtis bookended the second-half scoring, her first goal coming 2:11 into the half on a shot from the point quickly after an offensive-zone faceoff win. Maiah Aanenson (Moorhead) assisted. Lauren Maras (Alexandria) made it 5-0 from Johnson and Cahlilah Lindquist (Warroad) before Curtis added an unassisted, top-shelf goal that clanked iron before hitting the back of the net with 3:03 to play for the 6-0 lead.

In goal, Jada Pelowski (Roseau) with seven saves and Kasandra Fontaine (Bagley-Fosston) with eight saves combined for the shutout for Section 8A/AA. Sky Blue outshot Section 7A/AA by a 38-15 margin.

Eykyn’s hat trick leads Section 3A/AA rout of Section 6A/AA

Jessica Eykyn (Mankato East) scored 1 minute, 16 seconds into the game and finished the day with a hat trick and an assist to help Section 3A/AA Red to an 8-1 victory over Section 6A/AA White Sunday. The win came in the seventh-place game at Plymouth Ice Center.

In addition to Eykyn, Sophie Steindl (Mankato East) had two assists, Madisyn Krumholz (Burnsville) scored a goal and two assists and Kamryn Vanbatavia (Luverne) added a goal and two assists. Steindl and Krumholz assisted on Eykyn’s first goal.

Already playing with the early lead, Section 6A/AA quickly made it a 3-0 margin less than five minutes into the game with a pair of power-play goals 23 seconds apart on the only penalties of the contest. Mckenzie Keller (Mankato East) had the first one from Vanbatavia and Steindl. Then Eykyn recorded her second of the game on a play off an offensive zone faceoff with an assist to Krumholz.

Kylie Glassen (Burnsville) scored from Hailie Holman (Eastview) and Emmy Schulz (Mankato East), followed by Krumholz’s goal from Eykyn. That pair of goals about two minutes apart made it a 5-0 lead for Section 3A/AA. Lily Anderson (Eagan) pushed the lead to an even half-dozen on a point shot through traffic with Vanbatavia earning her second assist of the game.

Lauren Zawoyski (Edina) scored the only goal for Section 6A/AA, her second of the weekend, with 48.4 seconds left in the first half. Mia Maxwell (Edina) and Lily Anderson (Cretin-Derham Hall) assisted.

Eykyn had her hat trick by the 5:31 mark of the second half, with Mackaylan Mcgown (Eagan) on the helper. Vanbatavia finished off the scoring with an assist to Delaney Giesen (Mankato West) on the play.
