Section 1A/AA prevails in shootout

Section 1A/AA Navy Blue grabbed a 2-1 lead after the first half, but it didn’t let a tying goal early in the second half stop it from earning a 3-2 shootout victory over Section 8A/AA Sky Blue in consolation play Saturday.

Bria Holm (Moorhead) scored 7 minutes into the game for a 1-0 Section 8A/AA lead. But Section 1A/AA answered only 36 seconds later to tie it up, on a goal from Molly Grundhoffer (Shattuck-St. Mary’s) with Kennedi Bielenberg Howarth (Shattuck-St. Mary’s) and Cambria Monson (Northfield) adding the helpers.

Lyndi Schubert (Dodge County) gave Section 1A/AA the 2-1 lead 1:19 after that with an assist to Samantha Moehle (Farmington). A loose puck after the initial save ended up in the back of the net.

Madison Lavergne (Warroad) tied the game for Section 8A/AA early in the second half, with Brynne Folden (Brainerd-Little Falls) and Makenna Aure (Alexandria) getting the assists. Section 8A/AA continued to pressure offensively in the closing minutes of regulation but the game remained tied through the five-minute overtime period.

As the first shooter in the shootout, Moehle got the goaltender to commit and slid the puck into the net for the first and only goal of the three-players-a-side shootout.

Section 1A/AA Navy will play in the consolation final on Sunday afternoon.
