Week 1 | Youth 14U Tier I League

This weekend Burnsville hosted the opening games of the 2018-19 season for the CCM High Performance Youth 14U Tier I League.  Friday night kicked off with some fireworks as the Lakers scored eight goals in their opening game and Shakopee native Matt Schoephoerster started the weekend festivities with a shutout.  For the second game of the weekend, the Walleye outscored the Green Giants 4-1.  Maple Grove’s Toby Hopp made 36 saves on 37 shots for the Walleye. The Moose won the final Friday night game 6-0, with two goals coming from Woodbury’s Jacob Sondreal. 

Saturday was another eventful day in Burnsville.  The day started with a win for the Walleye over the Moose, 5-4.  The second game of the day saw the Lakers outscore the Polars 4-1, followed by the Blue Ox winning over the Voyageurs 5-1.  Following a brief break, the Loons, led by Jack Erickson of White Bear Lake, claimed the third shutout of the weekend, topping the Voyageurs 4-0.  Next up was the Walleye who took on the Polars and ended the game with a 4-2 victory.  Final game of the evening saw Roseau’s Kellen Murphy tally a hat trick to help the Blue Ox defeat the Green Giants 7-1. 

Sunday kicked off with the Blue Ox winning 4-2 over the Lakers.  Moose finished their weekend 5-3 over the Green Giants.  Walleye ended the weekend with a 9-1 win over the Voyageurs.  Wayzata’s Cashen Naeve and Plymouth’s Landen Gunderson each tallied 2 goals, and Independence’s Johnny Hendrickson assisted for 4.  

At the end of the first weekend, the Walleye (4-0) and Blue Ox (3-0) sit atop the standings after they opened league play with unblemished marks. The Walleye powered their way to a strong start with 22 goals, including five goals and three assists from Gunderson who tops the leaderboard in goals and points. Meanwhile, the Blue Ox leaned on their defense and goaltending, allowing just four goals over the course of the weekend.

League play is set to resume Thursday, September 6 as the teams will head to Fogerty Arena in Blaine, MN for their second weekend of competition.
