Girls Final 54: Day 1 Recap

Girls 16 Blue - 2, Girls 16 Red 2

After a scoreless first half in the opening game of the Girls 16 Final 54 Festival,  Team Blue and Team Red traded tallies in the second half. Holly Eckers (Shakopee) opened the scoring for the festival with a quick backhand off a turnover, making it 1-0 Blue. Team Red responded the next shift though as Hannah Chorske sprung Edina teammate Estelle Jungels on a breakway and Jungels evened the score at 1-1. Blue regained their one goal lead on a shot by Audrey Wethington (Blake) later in the period, but once again, Red battled back as Emme Nelson (Mahtomedi) wired a wrist shot into the top corner to tie the game.

Girls 16 White - 3, Girls 16 Blue 1

In game two of the day and Team White's first of the festival, Marki Oberg (Alexandria) capitalized on a one-timer feed from Margaret Nicholson (Minnetonka) on a three-on-one to gain a 1-0 lead. Then, Sydney Langseth (Eden Prairie) scored twice in four minutes in the second half to earn Team White a 3-0 lead. Audrey Wethington (Blake) was able to interrupt Team White's bid for a shutout late in the second half to make it 3-1, but that proved to be the final score.

Girls 17 White - 3, Girls 17 Blue 2

Gabbie Smith (Brainerd) opened and finished the scoring in the first game of the Girls 17 Final 54 Festival as she led Team White to a 3-2 win. In the first half, Smith capitalized on a 2-0 opportunity, opening up a 1-0 lead for Team White. Later in the first half, Bailey Burton (Gentry) tied the game for Team Blue on a breakaway, but the tie was short lived as Sophie Rausch (Fergus Falls) went bar down to restore the one goal lead for White a mere 30 seconds later. Team Blue evened the score once more in the second half on a tally by Allie Bussey (Hibbing), only to have Smith score the game winner for Team White on the following shift.

Girls 16 Red - 4, Girls 16 White - 4

The final Girls 16 game of the day between Red and White proved to be a true seesaw battle. Team White took 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the first half on goals by Elizabeth Northquest (Spring Lake Park) and Claire Vekich (Grand Rapids-Greenway). Red countered with a breakaway goal by Jungels and a rebound tally by Anika Stoskopf (Roseau). Sophia Urban gave White another one goal lead in the second half, but Stoskopf answered back again, making it 3-3. Late in the 2nd half, Chorske fed Jungels for a power play goal giving Red their first lead of the game, 4-3. Kayla Santl (Roseau) scored the game-tying and final goal of the game a couple minutes later for White.

Girls 17 Red - 5, Girls 17 Blue - 5

After a relatively quiet first half, which was highlighted by Brinna Martin (North Wright County) for Red and Cheyenne Abear (Brainerd) for Blue, the two teams put on a scoring clinic in the second half piling up four goals each. Molly McHugh (Minnetonka) pulled Red ahead 2-1 just a minute into the second half. Then, Jenna Hartung (Burnsville) and Madison Mashuga (Anoka) combined to score three goals in a span of four minutes to put Blue up 4-2. Just when it looked like things were calming down, Red went on a scoring streak of its own.  Goals by Taylor Nelson (Cloquet), Aleah Giddings (Anoka) and Brieja Parent (Forest Lake) put Red back on top 5-4 with four minutes to play. Blue wasn't done yet though as they pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker, applied heavy pressure and Hartung came through with her second goal of the game to tie it up at 5-5 with nine seconds left on the clock.

Girls 17 Red - 4, Girls 17 White - 2

In the final game of the day, Red built off its strong second half against Blue by jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Olivia Mobley (Breck) and Martin. A power play goal by Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka) helped White cut the lead to 2-1 at the halfway point of the game. Goals by Anne Kuehl (Edina) and Currie Putrah (Shattuck) in the second half expanded Red's lead to 4-1, which proved to be too much for White despite a late goal by Rausch.
