CCM HP Girls 16: Day 2 Recap

Section 1A/AA – 6, Section 3A/AA 1

After an overtime loss in the opening round, Section 1A/AA rebounded nicely on Saturday with a 6-1 win over Section 3A/AA. Section 1 opened the scoring nine seconds into the game thanks to a goal from Lindsay Maloney (Lakeville South). She would add another goal later in the half. Sarah Dravis (Rochester Lourdes) helped lead the way for Section 1 in the first half with a pair of goals. Margaret Hanzel (Rochester Lourdes) also scored in the five-goal first half. In the second half, Dravis got her third goal of the game. Section 3 also got on the board thanks to a goal from Carissa Oberding (Park of Cottage Grove). In net, Corrin Hanson (Rochester Lourdes) and Anna Julius (Woodbury) combined for 15 saves in the win. Mckenzie Allen (Apple Valley) and Amelia Julian (Eastview) stopped 22 shots for Section 3.

Section 2A/AA – 3, Section 4A/AA 1

Section 2A/AA got out to an early 2-0 lead and cruised to a 3-1 victory to advance to Sunday’s fifth-place game. Emily Bayless (Minnetonka) got Section 2 on the board at the 10:08 mark of the opening half. Fellow Skipper Lacey Martin (Minnetonka) made it 2-0 later in the half. Nina Steigauf (Hill-Murray) got Section 4A/AA’s lone goal of the game in the first half. In a lively second half, Olivia Jones (Minnetonka) became the third Skipper to score in the game as she made it 3-0 with five minutes remaining in regulation. Olivia Renzel (Chaska/Chanhassen) and Aidan Edge (Minnetonka) combined to make 21 saves in a winning effort. Sophie Cronk (Stillwater) and Rachel Kennedy (Hill-Murray) stopped 34 shots.

Section 8A/AA – 4, Section 6A/AA 2

With 1:36 left in regulation, Kayla Santl (Roseau) came up with the big play and scored the eventual game-winning goal as Section 8A/AA advanced to championship game on Sunday. These two teams were scoreless until late in the first half when Sara Aadalen (Wayzata) went coast-to-coast and converted on a high wrist-shot to give Section 6A/AA an early 1-0 lead. In the second half Section 8 came out in a big way. Shelby Breiland (Thief River Falls) scored a pair of goals nine seconds apart early in the second half to give her team the lead. Later in the half, Anna Doherty (Alexandria) notched her first goal of the tournament. The game looked like it was headed to overtime until Santl’s late-game heroics. She put an exclamation point on the win with an empty-net goal with 41 seconds remaining. Nettie Kimble (Bemidji) and Gabriella Steele (Thief River Falls) combined for 21 saves in a winning effort while Ava Christie (Blake) and Carly Greene (Benilde-St. Margaret’s) made 26 saves.

Section 7A/AA – 2, Section 5A/AA 1

A pair of goals in the first half was the difference for Section 7A/AA as the team advanced to Sunday’s championship game with a 2-1 win over Section 5A/AA. Madelyn Skelton (Cambridge-Isanti) got things going for Section 7 when she scored at the 8:58 mark of the first half. Minutes later, Claire Vekich (Grand Rapids/Greenway) doubled the Section 7 lead with a wicked wrist shot that found its way to the back of the net. In the second half, Section 5 would cut the lead in half thanks to a goal from Kensie Malone (Gentry Academy). But in the end, Section 5 would come up a goal short. Section 7 netminders Josephine Bothun (Forest Lake) and Amanda Pelkey (Andover) made 16 saves in the win. Anna Gilgosch (Centennial) and Eliya Johnson (Coon Rapids) manned the net for Section 5 and stopped 26 shots.
