Boys HP 17: Day 1 Recap

SECTION 2A/AA - 3, SECTION 4A/AA - 1

In the CCM HP Boys 17 Spring Festival opening game, Section 2 set the stage right from the drop of the puck with a fast pace and physical presence. Brady Ziemer (Holy Family) started the scoring for Section 2, burying a feed from Ryan Lesko (Eden Prairie) on an odd man rush. Later in the first half, Luke Loheit (Minnetonka) extended the lead to 2-0. Section 2 picked up right where they left of in the second half controlling play and making their lead 3-0 as Tim Piechowski (Eden Prairie) finished off a 2-on-1 rush. Matthew Gellerman (South St. Paul) brought Section 4 back within two goals midway through the second half, but Section 2 held on for the 3-1 win. Andy Beran (St. Paul Academy) and Drew Klemman (Hill-Murray) combined for 42 saves for Section 4. 

SECTION 6A/AA - 6, SECTION 3A/AA - 3

What a game as Joseph Gimberlin (Cretin Derham Hall) brought us our first hat trick of the tournament! Section 3 took the lead with a goal by Payton Matsui (St. Thomas Academy) 10 minutes into the first half.  Gimberlin hit his stride towards the end of the half, scoring 2 goals in less than 10 seconds bringing Section 6 on top with a score of 2-1.  Section 3 answered with a game tying goal from Brendan McFadden (St. Thomas Academy) to end the half.  Jackson Savoie (St. Cloud Cathedral) continued the momentum of Section 6, scoring a goal 2 minutes into the half.  Chase Foley (St. Thomas Academy) brought Section 3 right back in the game, dumping one in and tying it up 3-3. It was Section 6 that took the end of the second half with an additional 3 goals.  Jack Westlund (Alexandria) scored with 8 minutes left in the game putting Section 6 up 4-3.  Gimberlin came through with a hat trick scoring on an empty net with a minute left in the game.  Aaron Frengel (Edina) finished the game for Section 6 with a goal at 23:42 bringing the final score to 6-3.

SECTION 7A/AA - 3, SECTION 1A/AA - 1 

In the 3rd game of the CCM HP Boys 17 Spring Festival, shots were flying left and right but it took until almost the end of the first half for the first goal to hit the net with George Grannis (Duluth Marshall) scoring 15 minutes into the half.  Hunter Paine (Duluth East) dropped another goal in the net with 44 seconds on the clock, giving Section 7 a 2-0 lead going into the half.  Section 1 came out strong in the second, wth Wyatt Palmer (Shattuck) putting Red on the board and making it a 2-1 game.  Although both teams had great shots on net, ultimately Section 7 (Gold) added to their lead with Taiyo Larson (Elk River) scoring the last goal of the game, making the final score 3-1.  

SECTION 8A/AA - 4, SECTION 5A/AA - 2 

The final game of the night definitely did not disappoint with both teams bringing high energy.  Halfway through the first half, Section 8's Landon Overbo (Moorhead) dumped in the first goal of the game.  Jonah Bergstrom (Pine City) answered quickly putting Section 5 on the board and tying the game at 1.  With under 5 minutes left in the first, Nicholas Portz (St. Cloud) pushed Section 8 up 2-1 with the last goal of the half. The next goal of the game didn't come until midway through the 2nd with Jaron Moyer (Warroad) scoring for Section 8 and increasing the lead to 3-1.  Blue (Section 5) pulled back within one goal after Bryce Brodzinski (Blaine) put up a shot and bringing the game to a score of 3-2.  With a minute left, Section 5 pulled their goaltender, leaving the goal wide open for Nolan Westra (Moorhead) to score on an empty net with 27 seconds left in the game.  Section 8 beat out Section 5 in Game 4 with final score of 4-2
