Summary

This week's Drill of the Week comes from Wes Bolin, who is the Head Coach of the Woodbury High School Boys Hockey team. Wes has also been a key leader of Minnesota Hockey's Player Development team.

DESCRIPTION

  • Nets are both placed on the same end, with pucks on the other end.
  • Players are lined up along the boards on each blue line.
  • When the first breakout crosses the defensive blue line, the next repetition begins.

Progressions

  • Coach passes to skater #1; Coach passes to skater #2.
  • Coach passes to either skater #1 or skater #2 so players work on timing.
  • Remove the coach and replace them with a defenseman who passes to either skater and then follows up into the play as either a backchecker or a third forward.
  • Make the drill a 2 v 1 by having the defenseman stop at the far blue line, skate backwards to the red line, turn back to their defensive blue line and play the next group of forwards who have just broken out.
  • Make the drill a 3 v 1 by having a fourth player slide across to the other side and play the two forwards and one defenseman 3 v 1 (whistle controlled).
  • Add a fifth player to backcheck when the opposite side gets to the defensive blue line: 3 v 1 plus back-pressure to 3 v 2 (whistle controlled).

KEY POINTS

  • This split-ice drill teaches progression to work on break-out skills for two-team shared ice practices. There are multiple progression opportunities that can be implemented to this drill.
  • For best results in two-team practices, split each team into two different colors and balance competitively. For more information about how to run effective two-team practices, contact: wbhockey@gmail.com.
