Small area games have become one of the best adopted components of the American Development Model, and it's for good reason. The benefits of promoting competition and decision making in tight spaces, while enabling players to learn by playing are nearly endless.

They are also easily adaptable. Coaches have the ability to change the size and location of the playing area, the number of players and nets and the rules of the game to teach players any hockey skill or concept. They can even be adjusted to challenge teams' top players or provide opportunities for weaker players.

Here are five small area games that can be used to teach important hockey concepts while keeping all players focused and engaged.
