10 Minnesotans to Participate in AAPG at Xcel Energy Center

USA Hockey has announced the seventh annual USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game will be held Wednesday, September 19 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. A total of 42 players, including 10 Minnesota natives, have been selected to participate in this showcase of top American talent eligible for the 2019 NHL draft.

"We're really excited to bring this event to Minnesota for the very first time," said John Vanbiesbrouck, assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. "Fans will have the unique opportunity to see the next generation of American players, including the potential top pick in the next NHL Draft as well as ten players from the state of Minnesota. Hockey in our country continues to grow and it's great to be able to showcase our top players in an event like this."

Following last year’s event, 28 players who participated in the contest went on to be chosen in the 2018 NHL Draft. In each of the past two years, the most valuable player in the USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game also became the first American selected in the draft as Brady Tkachuck (St. Louis, Mo.) was selected fourth overall last year and Casey Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie, Mn.) was chosen with the eighth pick in 2017.

To date, 44 Minnesotans have participated in the USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game and 27 of them were selected in the ensuing NHL Draft.  Seven of the participants from Minnesota have been selected in the first round including Mittelstadt (2017, Buffalo Sabres, 8th overall), Minnetonka’s K’Andre Miller (2018, N.Y. Rangers, 22nd overall), Edina’s Kieffer Bellows (2016, N.Y. Islanders, 19th overall), Burnsville’s Brock Boeser (2014, Vancouver Canucks, 23rd overall), Ham Lake’s Riley Tufte (2016, Dallas Stars, 25th overall) and Lakeville natives Ryan Poehling (2017, Montreal Canadiens, 25th overall) and Jake Oettinger (2017, Dallas Stars, 26th overall).

Collectively, 17 states are represented on the 2018 event roster, including Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Minnesota leads all states with 10 players, including Kaden Bohlsen (Willmar), Ben Brinkman (Edina), Ryder Donovan (Duluth), Ethan Frisch (Moorhead), Drew Helleson (Farmington), Aaron Huglen (Roseau), Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove), Michael Koster (Chaska), Garrett Pinoniemi (Delano) and Grant Silianoff (Edina).
