Boys HP 15: Day 1 Recap

District 6 – 2, District 8 – 1

A pair of goals from Nathan Stone (Edina) made the difference as District 6 opened the tournament with a 2-1 win. Stone would tally his first goal of the game with 12 seconds left in the second half. He would make it 2-0 at the 10:34 mark of the second half. District 8 would cut into the lead as Griffen Ludtke (Lakeville South) got his team on the board. Unfortunately for District 8, that was all the offense the team could find. District 6 picked up the win thanks to a combined 26 saves from Jack Stark (Chaska/Chanhassen) and Trevor Boschee (Prior Lake). Matt Syverson (Holy Angels) and Tyler McCarville (Hastings) stopped 17 shots for District 8.

District 10 – 5, District 16 – 3

It was a high-scoring affair as these two districts faced off. District 10 jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening half thanks to goals from Jacob Fritz (Spring Lake Park) and Blake Johnson (Elk River). Garrett Schifsky (Andover) led the way with a pair of goals in the half. In the second half, District 16 would tighten things up. After Paul Huglen (Roseau) scored District 16’s lone goal in the first half, goals from Blake Biermaier (Thief River Falls) and Carson (Max) Strand (Roseau) cut the District 10 lead to 4-3. District 10 did manage to find some breathing room with 4:28 remaining as Andrew Carls (Coon Rapids) scored to make it 5-3.

District 2 – 5, District 4 – 0

A four-goal first half was all the difference as District 2 won its first game of the weekend. Triston Tabucol (Hill-Murray) got things going as he tallied a pair of goals for District 2 in the first 5:55 of the game. Joseph Frattalone (White Bear Lake) and Nathan Hardy (Hill-Murray) scored to give District 2 a 4-0 lead heading into the break. In the second half, Hunter Johnson (Forest Lake) scored the lone goal of the frame to extend District 2’s lead. District 4 would be held off the scoreboard thanks to the work of District 2 netminders Jack Cashin (Gentry Academy) and Croix Kochendorfer (St. Paul Capitals). The goaltending duo stopped 13 shots in the win. Joseph Gag (New Ulm/Sleepy Eye) and Hobie Hedquist (Sioux Falls Stampede) combined for 42 saves for District 4.

District 5 – 5, District 15 – 2

These two teams combined for six goals in the second half and made this game an interesting one, but District 5 pulled away in the end to pick up the victory. District 5’s Dekraai Elbridge (Willmar) scored the lone goal of the opening half. In the second half, District 5 opened up a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals Zach Miller (St. Michael-Alberville) early in the second half. District 15 clawed back into the game thanks to goals from Caiden Kjelstrom (Northern Lakes) and Justin Stalboerger (Moorhead) but couldn’t finish the job. Hayden Walters (Sartell) and Gavyn Lund (Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato) each scored late to extend the District 5 lead. In goal, District 5 won behind the play of Travis Olson (Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato) and Quentin Sigurdson (Sioux Falls). They combined to stop 18 shots in the win. District 15 goaltenders Adler Hoagland (Northern Lakes) and Evan Myran (Moorhead) made 32 saves.

District 3 – 11, District 9 – 2

District 3 opened the weekend in a big way as the team had an eight-goal half and finished with an 11-2 victory over District 9. Layton Liffrig (Mankato East) gave District 9 a strong start with a goal 45 seconds into the game. From there, it was all District 3. Six different players scored in the first half, including Brandon Reller (Maple Grove) and Andrew Streeter (Wayzata), who each tallied two goals in the opening frame. District 3 continued its offensive onslaught in the second half as Henry Nelson (Maple Grove), William Matzke (Blake) and Elias Padilla (Academy of Holy Angels) added goals. Matzke’s goal was his second of the evening. District 3 held down District 9 behind the goaltending of Grayson Wong (Wayzata) and Jack Wieneke (Maple Grove). They stopped 15 shots in the victory. Section 9’s goaltenders — Riley Madsen (Mankato East) and Payton Mancuso (Winona) stopped 38 shots in the game.

District 12 – 3, District 11 – 2

A three-goal first half proved to be enough as District 12 held on and defeated District 11 3-2 in the final game of the opening day of action. All of District 12’s goals came in the first half as Ty Donahue (Greenway), Hunter Bischoff (Grand Rapids) and Joseph Delgreco (Grand Rapids) gave District 12 a lead heading into halftime. District 11 staged a comeback in the second half thanks to goals from Cole Antcliff (Hermantown) and Ethan Lund (Hermantown). Unfortunately, District 11 couldn’t get the equalizer as District 12 goaltenders and International Falls natives Max Marcotte and Mitchell Nemec combined for 28 saves in the win. District 11 netminders David Rutka (Hermantown) and Jacob Walsh (Cloquet) combined for 14 saves.
