2018 Girls NIT: Day 2 Recap

MINNESOTA 18U - 4, WISCONSIN - 4


Down a goal with under a minute left in regulation, Minnesota 18U capitalized in the clutch when  Madeline Wethington (Blake) buried a pass from Haylee Blinkhorn (Hill-Murray) to force a tie with 34 seconds to go against Wisconsin in the opening game of the second session. 

 Kelsey King (Elk River) drew first blood 8 minutes, 35 seconds into the game. Abigail Stow (Eau Claire Memorial) leveled the score with 1 minute, 38 seconds remaining in the first period. Minnesota 18U took a two-goal lead early in the second period off goals from Madison Tix (Blake) and Clara Billings (Rochester Lourdes). Kiana Flaig (Roseau) stopped 20 shots in the first half of the game for Minnesota 18U.

 Jenna Ruiz (Eagan), playing for Wisconsin, helped her team crawl back into the game, scoring late in the second period.  Anna Wilgren (Hudson) tied the game at the seven-minute mark of the final period. Stow had a second assist and Ruiz's goal and assisted Eau Claire Memorial teammate Ava Kison's go-ahead goal midway in the third period before Wethington netted the equalizer. 

Gwen Parker (Madison Memorial) stopped 23 of 27 shots in Wisconsin's net.

MINNESOTA SENIORS - 14, NORTH DAKOTA - 0


Minnesota Seniors was dominant from the jump.  Paetyn Levis (Rogers) scored 15 seconds into the game. Eleanor Moser (Farmington) followed, scoring a minute later. With Minnesota Seniors humming,  Katherine Huntington (Prior Lake) scored twice and assisted Madison Oelkers (Warroad) goal to cap a five-goal first period for the Seniors. Madison Bizal (Elk River) assisted both of Huntington's first-period goals. 

Anneke Linser (Centennial) tallied three points in a single shift in the middle period, scoring twice and adding an assist on a Taylor Heise (Red Wing) goal. Heise also had four assists in the second period. 

Huntington and Bizal both scored in the third period to cap a dominant performance where Minnesota Seniors outshot North Dakota 63-10. Lexi Baker (Lakeville South) notched a 10-save shutout in the Seniors net.

WISCONSIN - 7, NORTHERN MIDWEST - 1


A hat trick from Hadley Malcolmson (Waukesha West), coupled with two goals and an assist from Abigail Stow (Eau Claire Memorial) led Wisconsin to a resounding victory over Northern Midwest.

Malcolmson and Lauryn Hull (Kimberly) pushed Wisconsin ahead by two late in the first period. Wisconsin used that momentum after the intermission, as Stow scored and Malcolmson scored a pair of goals in the opening seven minutes of the middle period.

 McKenzie Oelkers (Warroad) netted Northern Midwest's first goal 2 minutes, 29 seconds into the final period, but Stow scored her second goal and assisted another by Ava Kison (Eau Claire Memorial) to smother any chance of a Northern Midwest comeback. 

Calla Frank (White Bear Lake) stopped 35 of 37 shots in the second half of the game for Northern Midwest, while Wisconsin goaltender Sydney McKersie (Middleton) made six saves.

MINNESOTA SENIORS - 14, MINNESOTA 18U - 2


Minnesota Seniors continued its run through the tournament field and made a statement scoring a trio of goals in the opening period. Anneke Linser (Centennial) scored off the draw, pulling the puck to her backhand and lifting the puck to the back of the net. She scored again just 12 seconds later. Taylor Heise (Red Wing) showed her hockey sense and used a forehand fake to score backhand for the third goal in the opening minute.

After a brief scoring drought, Gabriella Rosenthal (Blaine) found the back of the net for one of her two goals of the night in the 8th minute of action. Madison Oelkers (Warroad) and Paetyn Levis (Rogers) also had two goals for Minnesota Seniors. 

Ramsey Parent (Blaine) scored both of Minnesota 18U's goals.
