Plymouth, MN – October 8, 2017 – With victories at today’s Minnesota District Tier 1 Championships, three Minnesota teams advanced to the Girls 14U, Youth 14U and Youth 15 USA Hockey National Championships, which will be held April 5-10, 2018. Two of the teams advancing were crowned CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance Tier 1 League champions last weekend.
The champions included the Green Giants (District 10) 14U Girls team, Shattuck-St. Mary’s 14U Youth team and the Blue Ox (Team North) Youth 15 team. The Green Giants will go on to face other USA Hockey District champions at the USA Hockey National Championships in Marlborough, Mass. Shattuck-St. Mary’s will head to Charlotte, N.C. for the 14U National Tournament. The Blue Ox will travel to Plymouth, Mich. for the Youth 15 National Championship.
Girls 14U – The Green Giants, who won last weekend’s CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance League playoff last weekend in Blaine earned their way to Nationals with a 4-0 shutout of the Polars (Districts 3 & 5). Madelyn Christian led the way offensively for the Green Giants with a pair of goals, including the game-winner. Tyra Turner and Madison Kaiser also had goals for District 10, which only surrendered one goal on the weekend.
Youth 14U – The Shattuck St-Mary’s 14U Youth team defended their Minnesota District title with a thrilling 6-4 victory over the Walleye (District 3). Trailing 4-3 after two periods, Shattuck tied the game early in the third when Connor Mahony tallied his second marker of the contest. The game appeared headed to overtime until Conner Schneider skated in on a breakaway with 1:37remaining and tucked home the game-winner. Shattuck added an empty net goal to seal the victory.
Youth 15 – The Blue Ox advanced to Nationals after defeating the Walleye (District 3) in overtime, 4-3. It was the second straight day that the Blue Ox needed overtime to move on. Finn Hoops buried the game-winner just seconds after the Blue Ox killed off a Walleye power play in the extra session. It was Hoops’ second goal of the game. The Blue Ox jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage in the opening period on goals by Hoops and Mitchell Vekich. The Blue Ox built a 3-1 lead before the Walleye fought back and tied the game in the third period on a goal by Jack Wandmacher.
Minnesota will send four more teams to the National Championships with four more District games later this fall. District playoffs will be held at the Girls 16U and Girls 19U levels on October 24 at the Schwan Super Rink. The Youth 16U and Youth 18U District Playoffs will also take place at the Super Rink, November 7.
