Metro Southeast Captures Tier 1 16U League Championship

Metro Southeast claimed the CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance Youth 16U Tier 1 Championship on Sunday, October 30 with a thrilling 7-6 victory over Metro Northwest. Metro Southeast, as well as two other CCM High Performance Tier 1 League qualifiers, will participate in the Minnesota District Youth 16U Playoffs on November 7-8 at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.

The title game between Metro Southeast and Metro Northwest proved to be the type of game that keeps fans on their feet most of the night. It was fast paced and high scoring with a number of momentum swings. Metro Southeast held leads of 2-1 after the first and 5-3 after two periods, but the third period was the most exciting. Metro Northwest tied it at 5-5 with less than ten minutes left on the clock. Metro Southeast was able to grab the lead again a couple minutes later only to see Northwest tie it up at 6-6 with three minutes to play. In true buzzer beater fashion, Tyler Linnerooth tallied the game winner with one second remaining to secure the 7-6 win.

Metro Southeast will enter the Minnesota District Youth 16U Playoffs as the top seed from CCM High Performance Tier 1 League. They will take on Metro Southwest in the semi-finals, and Shattuck-St. Mary’s will face off against West 16U. Both semi-final games will be held Monday, November 7, and the winners will advance to the district final on Tuesday, November 8.

The CCM High Performance Youth 16U Tier 1 playoffs kicked off on Saturday, October 29 with Metro Northwest claiming a 5-4 shootout win over Metro Northeast. Austin Carroll of Metro Northeast had a hat trick in the game while Max Jennrich had a goal and 2 assists and Henry Jaunich also had 2 assists. For Northwest, Connor Bizal had 2 goals and Will Francis had 2 assists and scored the winning goal during the shoot-out. 

In the second and final game of the opening round, Metro Southeast defeated Central by a score of 6-3. Five different players recorded goals for Metro Southeast, led by Jack Mason who scored twice, and seven players picked up assists.  Ben Beattie had 21 saves for the win.                             

The semi-final games on Saturday evening showed the parity within the Youth 16U level as both teams who played in the morning upended their higher seeded foes who had first round byes. Metro Southeast once again utilized a balanced scoring attack to overpower Metro Southwest in a 6-2 win. This time all six goals were recorded by different players.  In the second semi-final, Metro Northwest pick up a 7-4 win over West. Jack Menne and Mike Crosbie each had two goals and Luc Monney chipped in two assists for Northwest.

In the third place game, Metro Southwest defeated West 4-3 in a shoot-out. Liam Malmquist recorded a hat trick with one goal in each period for Metro Southwest while Max Borst contributed two assists. Jacob Lillijord scored the winner in the shootout.
