Metro NE 16U Wins Two in NAHL Showcase

Metro Northeast 16U enjoyed an action-packed weekend at the NAHL showcase at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine this weekend. Coach Elliot Vesper said the team was competitive in the five games they played. They beat the Minnesota Magicians 16U, 3-2 in overtime and they also beat the St. Louis Selects, 5-4.

"We are starting to get members of the team to buy into what we are asking them to do," said Coach Vesper. "It's also a good feeling knowing we have a chance in every game with the way both of our goalies have been playing."

The highlight of the weekend was Forest Lake's Wyatt Anderson scoring the game-winning goal in overtime versus the Minnesota Magicians 16U team on Thursday, September 22.

West 16U Goes Undefeated on Weekend

West 16U had its strongest weekend of the season, tying the first game, winning the second, and tying a very strong Team Wisconsin team. Jack  Suchy from Orono  led the way in game one with 3 points (1 goal and 2 assists) followed by Nathan Clarke from Benilde with 2 goals and Chaska’s Keith Fletcher with 2 assists.

The first game versus a strong Metro SW 16U team who was unbeaten in their last six games was a fast paced game ending with the 3-3.  “The boys came out strong and we did a lot of good things. Getting pucks to net and increasing our chances is something we’ve talked a lot about, and today we accomplished step one. Step two becomes capitalizing on those chances.”

The second game versus Metro SE 16U was very physical with many penalties to both teams. With Homecoming, both teams were light on the bench with West 16U playing with only 7 forwards.   Leading the way for West was  Jack Suchy and Keith Fletcher, both with 2 points. The scoring started with a nice shot by Jack Suchy, assisted by Lukas Metcalfe.   The second goal was scored by Keith Fletcher, assisted by Shane Flaherty.  Metro SW 16U’s 3rd goal was scored by Keith Fletcher, assisted by Mike McNeil and Metcalfe.  The final game winner was scored by Orono’s Jack Suchy, assisted by Alex Webert.

The third game vs. a really skilled and fast Team Wisconsin also ended in a 3-3 tie. Metro West 16U’s scoring started with a goal from Armstrong’s Riley Enderle. Jack Suchy got the second goal assisted by Brandt Pederson.  Suchy go the go ahead goal assisted by Chaska’s Blaine Warnert and Alex Webert before Team Wisconsin battled back to tie the game in the closing minutes.

The coaching staff was pleased with the team’s direction from the weekend, saying, “We are coming together as a team. When we stay disciplined, stick to our game plan and play a style that fits us, we can compete with anyone. I’m proud of the grit the boys showed this weekend in having success against strong competition with three fast up and down games. We like the direction this ship is heading and look forward to continue that in Moorhead next weekend.”
