Fix was named the 2016 MHOA Service Award honoree.

The Minnesota Hockey Officials' Association (MHOA) established this award to honor an individual who has unselfishly made outstanding contributions to the officiating program in Minnesota during many years of service to the hockey community as an official and a volunteer.

The game of hockey ignites passion in people in many different ways. For Evonne (Young) Fix, it was officiating.

Fix got her first taste of officiating at age 11, when she stepped up to referee her younger brother’s games. One year later, she became a registered official with the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States (AHAUS), now known as USA Hockey, and she hasn’t stopped since.

Following high school, Fix began college at St. Cloud State University. By her second season in St. Cloud, she was officiating boys’ high school hockey games. She has since been selected to officiate in five Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournaments, including the first Girls’ State Championship game.

In 1994, Fix was recruited by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to work international games, starting with the 1994 Women’s World Championships in Lake Placid, NY. She would go onto officiate for the IIHF for eight years. It was during that time she had the honor of officiating in the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan and working the bronze medal game.

Fix also worked as an NCAA Women’s Division I College Hockey official for over ten years. During her time in college hockey, Fix officiated in two NCAA Women’s Frozen Fours, including the inaugural tournament in 2001 and 2003.

In addition to her accomplishments on the ice, Fix has spent countless hours serving as an instructor and mentor in the officiating community. She’s instructed at three US Women’s National Camps, two USA Hockey District Officiating Seminars and numerous seminars throughout Minnesota. Fix was also instrumental in developing the Minnesota Hockey Officials Association’s (MHOA) Women’s Camp, which is now held in St. Cloud each June.

Much has changed during Fix’s 30+ years as an official, but her passion for the game and commitment to excellence continue to make a positive impact on officials throughout Minnesota. Thank you Evonne for your years of service!
