The Minnesota Hockey Recreation League (“Rec League”) concluded another record breaking season on Saturday, March 12th with its annual festival celebration at Bloomington Ice Garden.  The Rec League continued its streak of impressive growth, surpassing last year’s record mark by over 130 players and reaching a total of 588 participants.

The Rec League’s emphasis on fun, skill development and accessibility was on display during its end of the year festival as teams celebrated their seasons. The event featured 20 games across all of the league’s four age levels (18U, 16U, 14U and 12U). Following their game, each team was treated to a pizza party in the rink’s lobby and all of the players received a t-shirt to commemorate the year.

“This year’s festival was a huge success,” said Rec League President, Ed Litman.  “It was a great way to bring the season to an end, leaving everyone with a lasting memory of their hockey experience.”

With no tournaments, playoffs or league trophy, the Rec League’s annual festival serves as the players’ primary showcase and often attracts local family and friends. It is estimated that nearly 2,000 people attended this year’s event over the course of the day.

One of the event’s special guests was Andrew Deans from Hiway Federal Credit Union (“Hiway”).  As the Rec League’s first-ever presenting partner, Hiway played a key role in getting more kids involved in hockey through their involvement in the Rec League’s scholarship program and marketing efforts.  Prior to one of the 12U festival games, the Rec League presented Deans with a commemorative jersey in recognition of Hiway’s outstanding support throughout the season.

“We are so grateful for Hiway Federal Credit Union’s support of hockey in Minnesota,” said Tom Mickus, the Rec League’s Director. “We look forward to continuing our relationship for years to come and introducing even more kids to the great game of hockey.”
