The deadline for grant applications is March 31st, 2016.

The Women’s Hockey Association of Minnesota (WHAM) has announced it will be conducting a Girls Hockey Spirit Grant Program in coordination with hosting the 2016 USA Hockey Girls’ Tier I and Women’s National Tournaments. The national tournaments will be held on March 31st – April 4th, 2016 at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, MN. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be offered as grants to local girls’ hockey associations.

The Girls’ Hockey Spirit Grants are being offered in anticipation of the excitement around girls’ and women’s hockey in Minnesota leading up to the national tournament. Youth associations are encouraged to show their girls’ hockey spirit by attending the tournament in their youth hockey apparel, creating posters, posting pictures or videos online that promote girls’ hockey and much more.

Girls in Minnesota will have plenty to cheer for as the 2016 USA Hockey Girls’ Tier I and Women’s National Tournaments could feature as many as 12 teams from Minnesota across five classifications.

The Upper Midwest Girls High School Elite League and Shattuck-St. Mary’s will be representing Minnesota by each sending a team to both the Girls Tier I 19U and Girls Tier I 16U levels. Minnesota is also being considered for additional at-large bids to the tournament at each of the levels.

There will be also at least one Minnesota team participating in each of the Women’s classifications.  That includes the Minnesota Blue J’s (2013 & 2014) and Minnesota McGoverns (2015) who have combined to win the last three Senior Women’s A National Championships. The Minnesota Blue J Bandits (Senior Women’s C) return as defending champions as well, and the Senior Women’s B tournament will feature three teams from Minnesota: Blue J Hawks, Shenanigans and Nutcrackers.

To apply for a grant, youth hockey associations must complete a grant application outlining how they are showing their girls’ hockey spirit this season. Official grant rules and applications can be found at www.whamhockey.org/2016nationals or by following the link below.
