Applications are now available for 2016 Gear Up Minnesota equipment grants.

On Saturday, October 24th, Minnesota Hockey hosted its first ever Gear Up Minnesota! Mite/8U Jamboree at Mariucci Arena. The event was conducted in partnership with Total Hockey and the University of Minnesota hockey teams in an effort to celebrate the unparalleled success of the equipment grant program. Gear Up Minnesota! has awarded more than 2,200 sets of brand new equipment to Minnesota Hockey players over the past five years.

The Gear Up Minnesota! Jamboree provided a full day of events for the six participating teams.  The players had the opportunity to compete in two half-ice games against other associations at Mariucci Arena. In addition, there were a number of off-ice festivities on the Mariucci  Arena concourse, and the families were offered special access to the University of Minnesota Women’s Hockey game.

Gear Up Minnesota! helped many of these kids get started in hockey,” said Total Hockey Director of Player Development, John Luetkemeyer. “The clubs in attendance are doing some amazing things to grow their membership. We absolutely wanted to be involved with recognizing them beyond their grant.”

The jamboree also served as the official kick off of the 2015-16 grant season for the Gear Up Minnesota! program. Associations are encouraged to apply online for starter skater or goalie sets of equipment. Applications will be reviewed in the spring of 2016 and distributed prior to the 2016-17 season.

“No other market in which we operate has a program as robust as Gear Up Minnesota,” said Luetkemeyer. “We really believe we have a wonderfully unique sport, and it’s great for kids so the opportunity to hand out equipment, to families and associations, to grow the game is an opportunity we can’t pass up.”

The Gear Up Minnesota! grant program is entering its sixth season and has already provided 111 unique associations with sets of starter hockey equipment, with a total worth over $450,000. Each starter set supplies nearly everything new players need to start playing hockey including a hockey bag, helmet, breezers, gloves, elbow and shin pads.  In addition, Gear Up Minnesota! now offers starter sets of goalie equipment that enable associations to encourage more kids to try playing goalie.
