Edina native and current Coulee Region (NAHL) goaltender Adam Carlson has committed to Mercyhurst College to play at the NCAA Division I level.  Carlson is now one of 10 players in the NAHL that has committed to a Division-I program, but his unique path sets him apart.

As a senior, Carlson was cut from his high school team but chose to play Junior Gold.  To say he made the best of it would be an understatement – Carlson went on to lead the team to a 22-2 record and the Junior Gold A Minnesota Hockey State Championship in 2012.  He allowed just two goals in three State Tournament games as the Hornets outscored their competition 18-2 en route to the state title.

“That season defined who I was as a hockey player,” Carlson told the Minnesota Wild in a Hockey Day Minnesota story last year.

After high school, Carlson committed himself to the goal of playing college hockey. He played his first year of junior at the Tier III level where he nearly won the league’s Most Valuable Player award and earned the opportunity to move up to the North American Hockey League (NAHL).

He has been improving ever since and entered the 2014-15 season as one of the top goalies in the league. So far this year, Carlson is tied for second (14) in wins and ranks third with a 93.3% save percentage in the NAHL.

"Adam has been the backbone of our team this season and now his dream of playing college hockey is coming true,” Coulee Region head coach AJ Degenhardt told NAHL.com. "Mercyhurst will not only be getting a top notch goalie, but an outstanding kid as well. I cannot wait to see where his future in hockey takes him.”

Carlson’s continued development and success serves as a great reminder to everyone involved in youth and high school hockey about the importance of a commitment to long term athlete development, giving kids an opportunity to play and help players’ inner drive shine through.
