Minnesota Celebrates Girls Hockey Weekend

Youth hockey associations, WHAM and NCAA women's hockey teams join together to celebrate the IIHF's World Girls Hockey Weekend.

This past weekend was the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Girls Hockey Weekend.  A record 27 communities in Minnesota hosted events designed to celebrate girls that are currently playing hockey while also encouraging more girls to try hockey.

A variety of organizations will be participated in the festivities including 26 local youth hockey associations, Women’s Hockey Association of Minnesota and three NCAA Division-I Women’s Hockey programs.

St. Peter, MN

Bulldog Youth Hockey hosted a try hockey event on Saturday that attracted 14 potential new players.  Current players from the association joined the girls on the ice to show them basic skating skills for a total of nearly 30 girls participating in the event. Following the skating session, several of the new girls registered to participate in St. Peter's transition program.

Duluth, MN

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team's held a clinic on Saturday, October 11th of 2014 World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend. The clinic was held at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth before the Bulldogs' game with the Minnesota Gophers.

A total of 40 girls, ages 7-12, participated in the free clinic which was led by Bulldog assistant coach and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Gina Kingsbury. Following the clinic, Gina showed her Olympic gold medals to the girls and she and members of the Bulldog women's hockey team signed autographs. In addition, all girls hockey players received a free ticket to the games on Friday and Saturday nights between the in-state rivals.

Chisago Lakes, MN

The Chisago Lakes Hockey Association hosted an event in which 45 new girls and nearly 50 current players hit the ice including a local Girl Scout troop, Girls Varsity players and three members of the Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey team.  Kate Flug (Roseville), Kelsey Cline (Bloomington) and Megan Wolfe (Eagan) joined the girls on the ice and signed autographs following the skating session. The event also included other off-ice activities such as a photo booth and crazy hair booth.

Bloomington, MN

Volunteers from Bloomington Girls, Bloomington Jefferson and Bloomington Kennedy/Richfield coordinated one of the biggest try hockey events of the day.  Varsity players from Jefferson and Kennedy as well as youth players from each of the associations help introduce dozens of new players to the game of hockey.  After the event, all of the players participated in a pizza party.

Hopkins, MN

Hopkins Youth Hockey hosted two events on Sunday, October 12th.  The first event was a try hockey designed to introduce new girls to the game.  Then, all of the girls currently registered met for a season kick-off event including pizza and a variety of activities.

Eagan, MN

The Eagan Hockey Association hosted a bring-a-friend event called Pigtails and Pucks to celebrate Girls Hockey Weekend.  Current players invited their friends out to join them in a series of on-ice games and activities led by Eagan's Girls Varsity team.

Willmar, MN

The Willmar Hockey Association, the Willmar Cardinal Girls High School players and coaches and the City of Willmar sponsored a Girls Hockey Day on Saturday October 11th.  40 girls participated in the event, which was the first day of ice for Willmar and was a great way to start the season.   Activities included ice time with open skating, shooting drills, goalie skills and tag! Refreshments and snacks were also provided for the skaters.
