The Minnesota Hockey Recreation League (“Rec League”) offers players in the greater metro area a low cost, low commitment hockey alternative. The Rec League has grown significantly over its first five seasons as its focus on developing a love for the game in a no check, low pressure environment has attracted more families each season.
In an effort to sustain its growth in players of all ages, this season the Rec League will be offering three levels of play: 12U, 15U and 18U. Teams at each age level will receive the same amount of ice time, starting in early December and running through the middle of March.
Registration for the season will run from Tuesday, Sept. 23rd to Saturday, Nov. 1st. All players have the opportunity within the registration to request to play with certain friends. The Rec League does its best to abide by players’ requests but reserves the right to move players up or down a level according to their skill level.
Teams will be formed in November according to friend requests and geographical area which helps minimize the travel and cost involved for families. Ice time has already been secured at Fogerty Arena (Blaine), Minnetonka Ice Arena, Richfield Ice Arena, Schwan Super Rink (Blaine) and Thaler Sports Center (Mound) with more being acquired in the coming months. No ice sessions will be held on Wednesday nights or before noon on Sunday.
The playing season starts in December with three one-hour clinics. Then, the regular season begins in January. At the 12U level, teams will average one practice and one game each week. The older age groups will follow the same format early in the season before switching to a 1:3 practice-to-game ratio. A year end festival will be held for all teams in mid to late March to celebrate the season.
