The Minnesota Wild, in partnership with Fox Sports North and Minnesota Hockey, announced today the outdoor high school games for the Ninth Annual Wells Fargo Hockey Day Minnesota will be held on Saturday, January 17th at Holman Field in St. Paul.
Hockey Day Minnesota will continue its tradition of hosting three high school hockey games over the course of the day followed by a college game and closing with the Minnesota Wild. The first game of this year’s event will pit St. Paul Johnson’s storied tradition of over 100 years of hockey against southern Minnesota’s rising star in Luverne.
The second game of the day will be a battle between the private school powerhouses of Hill-Murray and St. Thomas Academy, who boast a combined five state high school championships since 2008. The final high school game will showcase two girls high school teams as Cretin-Derham Hall and the Duluth Northern Stars are set to face off.
Later that night, the Minnesota Wild will host the Arizona Coyotes at the Xcel Energy Center, concluding Hockey Day Minnesota just a short distance from the day’s activities at Holman Field.
“We are thrilled to bring Wells Fargo Hockey Day Minnesota 2015 to Saint Paul’s Holman Field,” said Wild Vice President of Brand Content and Communications John Maher. “This is the perfect way to commemorate prep hockey’s second century in Saint Paul. It will be a day of celebration, from puck drop of the first high school game until the final horn sounds at that night’s Wild game.”
The event will be organized in coordination with the Minnesota National Guard and will honor the family members and soldiers of the Minnesota National Guard 34th Combat Aviation Brigade and 2-147th Assault Helicopter Battalion, based at Holman Field, who recently deployed to Kuwait. The soldiers currently in Kuwait may also have the opportunity to see this amazing event being hosted on their home base as organizers are working with the chain of command to provide live shots to them throughout Hockey Day Minnesota.
“The Minnesota National Guard is pleased to be a part of Hockey Day Minnesota 2015,” said Col. Kevin Olson, Director of Communications. “This event showcases how Minnesotans statewide connect to our military service members and families through hockey. Holman Field is a unique venue that will allow hockey fans to meet in person National Guard soldiers and airmen who serve our nation, state and communities.”
The proceeds of Hockey Day Minnesota 2015 will benefit Serving Our Troops and St. Paul Youth Hockey in an effort to further link the event and the hockey community by honoring our active and retired service members, as well as their families.
“Minnesoa Hockey is excited to again be a part of Hockey Day Minnesota,” said Minnesota Hockey Vice President John Perry. “The State of Hockey is lucky to have such a fantastic proponent of hockey as the Minnesota Wild, and we look forward to seeing these great teams showcase our game.”
