Minnesota Hockey would like to recognize Joslin Mumm, a 10U player from the Coon Rapids Youth Hockey Association. Joslin was selected as a finalist for the 2014 HEP Essay Contest for her response to “I can make my team better by…”. As a finalist, Joslin’s essay (below) was featured by FSN during their Hockey Day Minnesota broadcast, and she had the opportunity to attend a Minnesota Wild game this season.

“I can make my team better by always giving them my best effort and being supportive of them but it takes every player to make us a success. Cooperation is a huge role when it comes to playing on a hockey team. Every player contributes to the success of my team.

As I enter the rink, my body shivers with excitement. I’m always ready to meet my teammates in the locker room before a game and pump ourselves up with music and our pre-game cheers. We are like my family at dinner time. We get dressed in our gear, sing, play jokes, share stories and laugh while all this is taking place. We are a group of young girls that bond and support each other.

While on the ice, I never give up. I hustle, pass, shoot and encourage my teammates the entire time we are out playing. You see, this is what a hockey player does. As a Captain, I never give up on my teammates. We all have our highs and lows, but that is why we are a team. Teams work together to be successful and we stick together through tough times.

You see, TEAM is important. Without a team, there would be no me. And if there was no me, my team would not be complete. It takes all 12 of us working together to make our team better.

Win or lose, laughs or tears, I am so proud to be a part of my team!”
