Speeding Up Skill Development

Coaches often wish they had more practice time with their players. There just isn’t enough ice time to fit everything in. Players and coaches can overcome those challenges by incorporating dryland exercises. Since all sports begin with the same basic movements and core sports skills, dryland drills can help build critical skills.

USA Hockey has a complete set of ADM Dryland cards with a variety of drills for 6-12 year olds. The cards provide age-appropriate exercises that can be performed 1-2 times a week for 30 minutes before or after practice to help every player become a better athlete.

These fun drills help young athletes build a strong foundation in multi-directional movement skills, multi-directional speed, agility, balance, coordination, rhythm and special awareness. By working on these drills individually or in small groups, players will build the confidence to lead a healthy and active life in sport while allowing them to reach their genetic potential.

Below is a look at the six main categories of drills and an example from each. Visit USA Hockey's Dryland Training page for a full list of exercises.
