The Minnesota Ice Hawks Adult Sled Hockey team competed in the Fifth Annual Disabled Hockey Festival held at the Amherst Pepsi center from March 20-22 in Buffalo, NY. Competing in Division B along with Alaska, Michigan, San Antonio, and Tampa Bay the Ice Hawks began round robin play on Friday with a win over Tampa Bay and a loss to San Antonio.
After beating Alaska in their first game on Saturday they squared off with rival Michigan that evening to determine which team would face San Antonio for the national championship. The Ice Hawks came out of the gates fast jumping to a 2-0 lead after one period. Minnesota would score once more in the second on a goal by Kyle Brendalen, his third of the game, before holding on for a 3-1 victory and a rematch with San Antonio.
In the championship game, San Antonio jumped out to leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Minnesota fought back on goals by Nate Peitz in the second and Kyle Brendalen midway through the third and that was enough to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless overtime an NHL style shootout ensued. Each team scored once through three shooters before Rick Rud stoned the 4th San Antonio shooter leaving the door open for Randy McGlockin to seal the deal and give Minnesota its first ever Tournament Championship.
