Minnesota’s top 16 and 17 year old boys’ hockey players have spent the last two weeks competing against the best players in the country at the USA Hockey Player Development Camps in Buffalo, New York.  The results have been another shining example of the strength of community based hockey.

Ten Minnesota natives, the majority of which continue to play for their community on high school teams, were selected based on their performance during the national camps to play on the USA Hockey Under-17 and Under-18 teams during upcoming international competitions.

On top of that, a Minnesotan has finished atop the scoring leader board after each of the two camps.  Dylan Malmquist, Edina High School, racked up five goals and six assists during the Select 17 Camp, which was good enough for him to be the outright scoring leader at the end of camp.  A current member of the Burnsville High School team, Brock Boeser tied with three others after putting up 12 points, four goals and eight assists, at the Select 16 Camp.

The most exciting part is that these are still 16 and 17 year olds, entering the prime of their development years as hockey players.  That is why even though camps are in a way used to identify future prospects and the top players of today, the main focus is laying a foundation for development. Nonetheless, Minnesotans have reasons to be excited because it looks as if the talent pool remains deep and vibrant, ensuring an abundance of fantastic hockey at the high school level and beyond for years to come.

The USA Hockey Player Development Camps continue this week with the Girls' Select U18 in St. Cloud, MN and the Boys' Select 15 Camp in New York.

To reach the USA Hockey Player Development Camps, each of these players participated in the Reebok Minnesota Hockey High Performance Programs. These programs take place every spring and summer in order to provide the top players from each district or section in Minnesota the opportunity to play with and against the best players in the state.
