Athletics provide opportunities to develop life skills and characteristics - traits that transcend the gym or ice.

Editor's Note:  The events of last week provided an important reminder to everyone about the role of sports. When the Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres saluted the crowd at the TD Garden showed that sportsmanship is still a necessity when it comes to sports. Even at the professional level, hockey is  a game. For youth players, the main priority must continue to be developing character, forming habits of physical activity and having fun. Kevin Keto's column, which recently appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune provides further insight through his perspective as a high school basketball coach. No matter the sport or the age, Keto's words ring true as to what's important.

The gym was empty except three coaches and three hopeful athletes.  The three walk-ons, competing for the final roster spot on a Big East men’s college basketball team, had already completed shooting, ball handling, and defensive drills – about thirty minutes in all.  The head coach gathered them at midcourt and explained the next drill was based on a game scenario:  “Your teammate,” he explained, “makes a layup and draws a foul.  The opposing coach immediately calls timeout.  You are sitting in the last seat on our bench.  When I blow the whistle, demonstrate how you would react to the layup and how you would greet your teammates as they jog towards the bench.”

Athletics, especially team sports, provide a myriad of opportunities for young student athletes to develop life skills and characteristics - traits that transcend the gym.  The same personality traits that make a great point guard - dedication, unselfishness, discipline, strong communication skills, passion and a willingness to work – just so happen to make a great friend, spouse, parent, coworker, community member and global citizen.  There is arguably no better place for young men and women to hone these skills than the gym or playing field, an engaging and safe environment to take risks, get feedback and see firsthand what it takes to succeed.

Yet “success,” if defined by winning, was only experienced on the final day of the season by two of the sixty-three boys’ basketball teams in Minnesota’s 4A -  Apple Valley and Edina.  That means sixty-one teams in class 4A ended their season in failure.  As an assistant high school coach and avid basketball fan, I watched a dozen or so of those final failures this year. Yet I saw all of those players, some with flowing tears and limping legs, shake hands with their opponents.  I saw boys becoming young men as they applauded a superior team, collected their belongings and hobbled with broken dreams back to their locker rooms. 

Little do these young men know that they just experienced one of life’s most common events – losing.  Statistics suggest that in a time of recession, the average job seeker participates in seventeen interviews before being offered a position.  How can we possibly prepare ourselves to withstand that type of difficulty?  How can we possibly continue to be loving spouses, caring friends, supportive parents or productive citizens when giving our best and failing sixteen consecutive times?  Loss is not only relevant in the business world.  Perhaps I am an oddity but one hundred percent of my friends have failed to attain their dream homes, their perfect bodies, their ideal lifestyles, and the ability to keep loved ones alive forever.  If loss and failure occur everywhere, everyday, why have so many parents decided that their son or daughter deserve to escape it?  Since when has being the fourth player off the bench become a failure that no seventeen year-old should have to endure?  Since when has losing fifteen games in a season become an excuse to send heinous late night emails to unsuspecting coaches?  What have athletics come to when the family of a “demoted” starter badmouths the teammate who took his spot as they sit around a dinner table? 

Contrary to what some might believe, coaches do not congregate in their offices and decide how they can inflict the most emotional damage to the young athletes with whom they’ve chosen to spend three months.  Nor do they make decisions about playing time with a goal to embarrass or belittle the same young men and women for whom they’re writing letters of recommendations.  And they certainly don’t hatch evil plans to select seniors for the team with the intent to coerce them into raising monetary funds to be spent on underclassmen.  The vast majority of coaches make well thought out decisions that are intended to benefit the greater good of the team.  Do they always make the right decisions?  No - and neither do parents.  The difference is that parents have suddenly been given a green light to publically and privately harangue the efforts of a coach – often undermining their child’s enjoyment of sport – while a coach must accept the attack as “feedback” and attempt to mend the player-coach relationship.

My mother has always said, “If a mom didn't think her kid was the best, nobody would.”  Every young athlete deserves a mother and/or father that tells them they are the best.  But if parents were half as committed to facilitating their child’s personal growth throughout a season as they are to monitoring playing time and coaching errors, teams could actually demonstrate teamwork, athletes could feel good about their efforts, players could trust and respect their teammates and coaches, and at the end of the day each kid could sit around a dinner table and feel like a star.

The culture of high school sports is in the midst of a dramatic shift.  Sit amongst the fans at a game, a booster club meeting, or an end of the year banquet and it will become alarmingly obvious that youth athletics are becoming an investment – of money, of time and of pride – and parents are going to expect a return.  Unfortunately for those parents, fundraising doesn’t buy minutes on the court, chauffeuring youngsters to tournaments across the metro for nine years doesn’t guarantee championships, and sending a child to offseason workouts doesn’t earn them anything except an opportunity to improve, to stay or get fit, and to do what youngsters should do with their friends – have fun.

Back at tryouts, the gym suddenly echoed with the loudest holler it had ever heard. A young man landed with a two-foot thud.  Jumping as high as he could three more times, he gave two high fives and sprinted fifteen yards before finishing with an air-born chest bump to an incoming teammate.  The role-playing ended there.  Smiling, the head coach tossed a jersey to the young man and said, “Son, that is what this team needs.”  I didn’t witness this event but when the phone rang and an excited voice exclaimed, “I’m on the team,” it didn’t sound like a prospector hoping for a big return on his investment.  It sounded like a young man who had earned an opportunity to play a game he loves with a bunch of his buddies.
