Summary

This week's Drill of the Week comes from Steve Carroll, an assistant Women's Hockey Coach at Gustavus Adolphus College. This is a shooting drill that focuses on getting the goalie comfortable making saves and battling for the puck.

DESCRIPTION

  • Goalie 1 is behind the net. Player 1 is along the boards at the hash marks. Goalie 2 is in the net against the post.
  • Goalie 1 grabs the puck and passes it to Player 1. Player 1 catches a pass and skates around a cone just beyond the top of the face-off circle as Goalie 2 moves out into position.
  • Player 1 shoots the puck, and Player 1 and Goalie 1 play any rebounds.
  • Play until the goalie freezes the puck, it gets deflected away from the scoring area or goes in.
  • Then Goalie 1 passes the puck to Player 2, who is in the corner near the goal line.
  • Player 2 catches the pass and then skates around the cone located on the face-off dot as Goalie 2 moves out into position. Player 2 shoots the puck, and Player 2 and Goalie 1 play any rebounds.
  • Play until the goalie freezes the puck, it gets deflected away from the scoring area or goes in.
  • Keep score... The goalie who covers the puck or deflects it into a corner gets one point, or the player/goalie who scores a goal gets one point... The first team to five points wins the game. Then switch sides, and goalies 1 & 2 rotate positions and repeat the drill.

KEY POINTS

  • Both goalies are involved in the drill.
  • Develops puckhandling/shooting skills
  • Allows goalie to face a variety of shots
  • Teaches goalies to battle
  • Goalies learn to compete do what it takes to stop the puck
