Summary

This week's Drill of the Week comes from Bethany Brausen, the interim head coach at the University of St. Thomas. This will be her fourth season with St. Thomas, and before that, she was an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota after she played for the Gophers from 2010-14. Brausen has also spent multiple years coaching and teaching at the high school age level before moving to the college level.

DESCRIPTION

  • In variation 1, all 3 players start behind the net on their defensive side.
  • On the whistle, one player stays back and tries to puck protect along the wall while the other two players sprint to the far side of the ice and pressure the puck carrier who is protecting the puck along their wall.
  • The puck carrier can move up and down the wall but must stay below the "goal line" during the initial play.
  • Once the other 2 players get possession of the puck, they play 2v1 on that side of the ice and are trying to score before the other 2v1 scores.
  • If the defensive player gets the puck back, they are trying to protect it on their half of the ice and buy time for their teammates to score on the other end.
  • Whichever team scores first gets the point, creating a sense of "urgency." Play to a score or overall time. Everyone changes on the whistle, and players reset before the next whistle.
  • In variation 2, all 3 players start behind the net on their defensive side.
  • It is the exact same game except how it starts. On the whistle, the player with the puck "picks" a player across the ice and passes to them.
  • This player has been selected to be the "puck protector" so it is not predetermined like the first variation.
  • All plyers must wait to see who will become the puck protector and the other 2 are then pressuring the far side player to create 2v1. The same rules apply.

KEY POINTS

  • Puck possession and protection.
  • Forecheck.
  • 2v1.
  • Read and react.
