Summary

This week's Drill of the Week comes from Steve Carroll, the assistant Women's Hockey Coach at Gustavus Adolphus College. This is a team drill that focuses on goalie development and gives the netminder an opportunity to face shots from teammates from a variety of locations.

DESCRIPTION

  • The team is divided into two groups, with one goalie in the net at a time. Group #1 is in the corner, while group #2 is out near the opposite blue line.
  • The first player in group #1 starts with a puck and skates around the two cones and shoots from out high. They follow the puck to play the rebound, if there is one.
  • The goalie follows the player through the cones and gets in position to stop the first shot. The goalie uses skating and lateral movement skills to get into proper position to face the first shot and then to get in position to play any rebounds.
  • Once that sequence is completed, give the goalie the opportunity to get back on their feet and into position at the top of the crease.
  • Player in group #2 takes a puck and skates around the cones and in on the goalie. They can shoot short side or move across the front of the net while trying to score.
  • The goalie follows the player through the cones and moves laterally to get in position to make the save.
  • Complete the sequence. Repeat until all players have gone once, then switch sides and run the drill again.
  • Goalies can rotate into the net every four shots.
