Orange squad from Section 2 caps off the weekend with championship

The Orange team representing Section 2A/AA comprised mostly of the southwestern metro, defeated Section 1A/AA in Sunday afternoon's championship game 5-3 at Plymouth Ice Center.

Developing story...

Section 6A/AA (Gray) pulls away late to capture third place with 6-4 win over Section 7A/AA (Gold)

For much of the game, Section 6A/AA (Gray) pounded away with pressure and held a distinct shot advantage, only to find itself locked into a contentious tie late in the second half.

Then came Henry Lechner (Holy Angels)’s low-angle, near-side top shelf wrist shot that found itself tucked into the back of the net, a strike that changed the fortunes for good as Gray worked its way to an eventual 6-4 victory over Section 7A/AA (Gold) in the festival’s third place game.

Brittan Alstead (Wayzata) finished with a pair of goals as well, giving him three for the weekend, same for Michael Risteau (Benilde-St. Margaret’s).

Ben Doll (Andover) scored twice for the Gold squad, giving him three for the weekend and four points as well.

Weis' hat trick, shutout by Sabev and Schahn drive Section 5 (Sky Blue) to 7-0 victory over Section 3 (Green) in fifth place game

Keaton Weis (Rogers) netted a hat trick, and goaltenders Alex Sabev (Irondale) and Gavin Schahn (Centennial) combined for 29 saves as Section 5 (Sky Blue) blanked Section 3 (Green) for 7-0 victory in the 5th place game Sunday morning at Plymouth Ice Center.

Nine different skaters recorded a point in the victory, while four finished with multi-point games for Sky Blue. Owen Smith (Maple Grove), and Drew Krekelberg (Rogers) all finished with a goal and assist, while Andrew Karkoc (Maple Grove) chipped in with two helpers.

Wes opened the scoring with 8:29 left in the first half, and Krekelberg added another about a minute later as Sky Blue took a two-goal lead into the halftime break. Goals kept coming in the second half, and Section 3 was left to chase without much success in cracking the code for Sky Blue’s goaltending, despite putting up 29 shots.

Section 4A/AA (Royal Blue) erupted with four second-half goals to knock off Section 8A/AA (White) via a 5-2 final Sunday morning at Plymouth Ice Center, earning its first win of the weekend and capturing a seventh place in the process.

Simon Seidl (Hill-Murray) recorded the pure hat trick, stringing together the first three goals of the second half to put the Blue squad on a victory footing and finish the festival with four goals to his credit.

Elijah Bailey (Gentry Academy) and Ben Tauscher (East Ridge) also chipped in for Section 4 as Bailey opened the scoring with 8:30 to go in the first, and Tauscher knocked home an empty-netter in the waning moments.

Andrew Lane (Hill-Murray) and Wesley Strub (Mahtomedi) teamed up for the win between the pipes, combining for 31 saves.   -- Drew Herron
