14 Minnesotans Selected for Team USA Rosters

USA Hockey recently announced its rosters for the U.S. Under-18 and Under-17 Men’s Select Teams that will compete in international competitions this August, as well as the roster for the U.S. Women’s National Team Residency Program. The three rosters included a total of 14 Minnesotans.

USWNT Residency Program

The 2021-22 U.S. Women's National Team Residency Program, which will feature 27 women in preparation for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, will commence in October at the Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. Six Minnesotans, including five who were a part of the U.S. gold medal team in 2018, were selected for the program.

Lee Stecklein (Roseville) enters the residency program with a chance to participate in her third Olympic games after winning a silver medal in 2014 and gold in 2018. Joining her will be 2018 Olympic teammates Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights), Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth), Kelly Pannek (Plymouth) and Maddie Rooney (Andover), as well as newcomer Grace Zumwinkle (Excelsior).

In addition, 25 players from the residency program will be selected to represent the U.S. at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship which is set for August 21-30 in Calgary, Alberta.

U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team

The U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select team will compete Aug. 2-7 at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. Minnesota natives and high school hockey standouts Jimmy Clark (Edina), Casy Laylin (St. Michael), Sam Rinzel (Chaska) and Zam Plante (Hermantown) were selected for the team, following their performances at the USA Hockey Boys Select 17 National Player Development Camp.

The 2021 Under-18 Men’s Select team will also be led by a pair of Minnesota natives. Roger Grillo (Apple Valley) is serving as the team’s general manager, and Guy Gosselin (Rochester) is an assistant coach. Gosselin and Grillo both serve as ADM Regional Managers for USA Hockey, with Gosselin spending significant time assisting associations in Minnesota.

U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select Team

Three Minnesota natives have been chosen for the 2021 U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team that will compete Aug. 17-21 at the Five Nations Tournament in Visp, Switzerland. Cameron Briere (Stillwater), Danny Nelson (Maple Grove), Jayson Shaugabay (Warroad) and William Whitelaw (Rosemount) will all have the opportunity to represent the U.S. on the international stage for the first time.

Each of the players were selected following their first national player development camp, which was held in Amherst, New York this past week.
