Minnesota Hockey hosted its annual awards dinner on Saturday, June 19 to honor its 2021 award winners. The banquet, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, served as a celebration of the recipients’ dedication to youth hockey over decades of service, as well as recognizing the incredible perseverance of volunteers throughout Minnesota this past season.

Each year Minnesota Hockey recognizes outstanding volunteers and athletes for their leadership with a series of scholarships, service awards, President’s Awards, an MHOA Service Award, the Ted Brill Award and the Don Clark Award.

The 2021 recipient of the prestigious Don Clark Award was David Margenau (Maple Grove, MN), who has served in various roles as a youth hockey volunteer for nearly 40 years at the association, district and state levels. Margenau has been a leader in player, coach and leadership development including the establishment of prominent Minnesota Hockey programs such as the Association Leader Excellence Conference, Hockey Director Conference, Hockey Education Program, Minnesota Development Model, and much more.

The 2021 Ted Brill Award, which is presented to Minnesota’s most influential leaders in player and coach development, was presented to Mike MacMillan (Minneapolis, MN). MacMillan has led the expansion of Minnesota Hockey’s CCM High Performance programs for over 25 years while also serving as Minnesota’s Coach-in-Chief for 15 years and then USA Hockey’s Coach-in-Chief since 2010. A long-time youth, high school and college coach, MacMillan also serves as the Executive Director of the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association for boys’ high school coaches.

The Minnesota Hockey Officials Association (MHOA) recognized Ethan Anderson (Mankato, MN) with its 2021 MHOA Service Award. Anderson has been an official at the youth, high school and NCAA levels for the past 32 years but his greatest impact has been as a leader of and the schedule assignor for the Southern Minnesota Hockey Officials Association (SMHOA), where he has recruited and mentored young referees for the past 20 years.

Minnesota Hockey President Steve Oleheiser presented three individuals with the President’s Award for 2021. Oleheiser praised the outstanding contributions of: Shari Olson (Duluth, MN), who started Minnesota Hockey’s Recruiting & Retention Committee and has served on the District 11 Board of Directors for over a decade; Mike Schoonover (Eagan, MN), who has encouraged and assisted thousands of young athletes in receiving heart screenings through the Patrick Schoonover Heart Foundation; Mike Terwilliger (Eden Prairie, MN), who selflessly and spectacularly served the critical role of Minnesota Hockey COVID-19 Coordinator and primary contact during the pandemic.

Minnesota Hockey recognized the following board members for their years of service and dedication: 15 years – Tom Mickus (St. Paul, MN); 7 years – Colleen Donovan (St. Cloud, MN), Steve Gapinski (St. Michael, MN) and Rhonda Madsen (Elk River, MN); 5 years – Nicole Brodersen (Hopkins, MN).

The 2021 Minnesota Hockey Scholarship Award winners, each of which will receive $1,000 for post-secondary education, and Disabled Hockey Grants recipients were also announced including:
