Boys 15: Day 2 Filled With High Scoring Affairs

After a morning filled with three consecutive shutouts, all three afternoon games at Plymouth Ice Center featured teams pulling away in the second half. Here are the highlights at Day 2 of the 2021 Boys HP 15 Spring Festival. 

District 3: 9 - District 9: 0

What was a close game for the first 40 minutes turned into a goal-scoring bonanza for District 3 as the team advanced to 2-0 in the Red Pool with its second straight shutout. After two goals 23 seconds apart to put District 3 ahead 2-0 at halftime, the team scored seven times on 23 shots in the second half to pull away. 

Seven players had multiple points, led by Will Zellers (Maple Grove) three-point (1G-2A) game and Brittan Alstead’s (Wayzata) two goals. District 3 goaltenders Joshua Middleton (St. Louis Park) and Mason McElroy (Wayzata) stopped all 16 shots faced.

District 6: 7 - District 12: 0

The shutout streak continues as well for District 6. Goaltenders Caleb Heil (Chaska Chanhassen) and Kam Hendrickson (Holy Family) combined to turn away 15 shots from District 12, who are 2-0 in the Blue Pool. 

Meanwhile, the offense came in bunches as John Stout (Minnetonka), Ashton Schultz (Chaska Chanhassen), and Gavin Uhlenkamp (Chanhassen) each scored twice for District 6. Uhlenkamp also had a pair of assists to finish the day with four points, one of five D6 players to get multiple points.

District 16: 7 - District 4: 0

With his teammates coming off the bench to give him stick taps, Tate Metcalf (Bemidji) finished the first half with a shutout performance for District 16. Conner Roff (Thief River Falls) joined him in the second half, making 9 saves to give D16 its first shutout of the weekend..

Goals in the final minute of the first half by Brock Seeger (Red Lake Falls) and first minute of the second half by Peyton Sunderland (Bagley) put the game out of reach for District 4. One of four D16 players with multiple points, Sunderland finished the game with two goals as District 16 picked up its first win.

District 8: 8 - District 11: 2

Trailing 2-1 with less than 11 minutes remaining in the first half, District 8 turned things around in a heartbeat. D8 scored four goals in a 2:41 span to take control and head into halftime leading 5-2. Ben Miller (Hill-Murray) needed five seconds to tie the game after District 11’s Brady McGinn (Duluth Denfeld) put his team ahead. 

District 8 went on to add three more in the second half to hold on and win 8-2. Andrew Lane (Hill-Murray) turned aside all six District 11 shots he faced. Jordan Brothers (Eastview) and Ben Tauscher (East Ridge), who scored twice 26 seconds apart, each ended the game with  two goals and an assist.

District 5: 5 - District 2: 2

Joe Gilliespie (St. Michael-Albertville) turned a 1-1 tie game at halftime into a 5-2 District 5 win over District 2, getting the game-winning goal 44 seconds into the second half. John Hirschfeld (St. Cloud) and Toren Miller (Hutchinson) scored a minute apart on shots from the top of the circle to make it 4-1 before Kohen Kindgren (St. Michael-Albertville) cleaned up in front of the net for a four-goal lead. 

District 2 initially led 1-0 on a goal by Boden Sampair (Mahtomedi). Charles Renner (Hutchinson) tied the game on a feed from Hirschfeld before the two teams played 17 minutes of scoreless hockey. Renner and Hirschfeld both finished with two points (1G-1A), as did District 2’s Simon Seidl (Hill-Murray).

District 10: 7 - District 15: 2

Three goals in the final 4:46 of the first half put District 10 in position to pull away in the second half, defeating District 15 7-2 to advance to 2-0 in the Blue Pool. Gavin Sperling (Elk River) and Trevor Aberwald gave D10 breathing room before Benjamin Doll’s (Andover) last-minute goal made it a three goal deficit at halftime. 

District 10 added to its lead thanks to Nicholas Johnston (Rogers) and a blast by Rocko Gorowsky (Andover) for his second goal of the game. Five District 10 players finished with multiple points. District 15 got out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to Brooks Cullen (Moorhead) before Gorowsky tied the game. Otto Reinhart (Totino-Grace) had a flawless second half in net for D10, stopping all eight shots he faced.
