Minnesota Seniors rally, knock off Wisconsin 18s in shootout

The Minnesota Seniors rallied back from a late two-goal deficit, then rolled to a shoot out victory on the back of a Sullivan Scholle (Chaska)’s wrist shot Thursday evening at Plymouth Ice Center.

After Wisconsin pulled ahead 4-2, the Gold squad from the Gopher state struck twice in the final two minutes to mark a wild finish.

Grant Ellings (Benilde-St. Margaret’s) pulled Minnesota within one on a set up from Cam Boche (Lakeville South) and Luke Delzer (Totino-Grace). That was followed about 80 seconds later with a goal from Scholle to pull it even.  Sam Groebner (Eastview) and Sam Jacobs (Maple Grove) assisted on the equalizer.

Scholle’s was the only goal to hit in the shootout, but it was enough to push Minnesota SRs into the win column on opening day.

Layton Lifrig (Mankato East/Loyola) added a goal and an assist for the Minnesota SRs.

Wisconsin was led by Aidan Lenz (Madison Edgewood), who finished with a goal and an assist.   -- Drew Herron

North Dakota too much for Michigan 18s

Colton Schultz (Bismarck Century) and Brendan White (Grand Forks Central) each chip in two points to help lead North Dakota to a 4-1 win over Michigan 18s. Zach Sandy (Fargo South) stops 23 of 24 shots in net to secure Green victory.

Michigan 18s goal was scored by Ben Polamsky (Bay Area Reps) late in the second period to force a tense start to the third.

But for most of the final period, North Dakota kept the pressure on and held the zone with proficient play along the boards to sustain zone time and generate quality scoring chances.  -- Drew Herron
