HP 16 Day 3: Section 2 gets clutch goaltending, timely scoring as it claims championship with 3-1 triumph over Section 5

Championship: Minnetonka's Gavin Garry scores winning goal, Chaska's Carter Wishart flawless in goal again as Section 2 eases to 3-1 win over Section 5

The Minnetonka connection of Gavin Garry and Daniel Pasqua provided the winning goal on Sunday as Section 2 eased to a 3-1 victory over Section 5 on Sunday in the championship game of the CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance Boys 16 Festival at Plymouth Ice Center.

Garry was stationed in front of Section 5 goaltender Wesley Johnson (Totino-Grace) as he got a piece of Pasqua’s shot from the blue line. The goal put Section 2 ahead 2-1 with 17:50 remaining in the second half.

Caleb Bendell (Southwest Christian) added an insurance goal for Section 2 with 4:05 remaining. 

Tanner Bruender (Chaska) put Section 2 ahead 1-0 with the lone goal of the first half and Carter Wishart (Chaska) made 21 first-half saves. Wishart finished the tournament with shutouts in all three 24-minute halves he played, stopping a combined 37 shots.

Connor Stelljes (Maple Grove) pulled Section 5 into a 1-1 tie 3:29 into the second half. Garry’s go-ahed goal came just 2:41 later.

Section 2 goaltender Isaiah Paulnock (Eden Prairie) stopped 16 of 17 second half shots. Johnson stopped 18 of 20 shots and Jack Hanson (Chisago Lakes) made 15 saves on 16 first-half shots for Section 5.

Third place: Moorhead's Gramer scores shootout goal to lift Section 8 past Section 6 after 2-2 OT tie

Defenseman Joe Gramer (Moorhead) scored in the fifth round of a shootout to lift Section 8 past Section 6 in the third-place game after the teams skated to a 2-2 overtime tie.

Gramer beat Section 6 goaltender Will Ingemann (Wayzata) with a deke and shot past Ingemann’s outstreched right leg. It was the first shot to get past Ingemann all weekend, who didn’t allow a goal through three 24-minute halves (15 saves against Section 6), Sunday’s 5-minute overtime period (two saves) and four previous players in the shootout for a total of 53 saves on 54 shots.

Section 8 goaltender Hampton Slukynsky (Warroad) stopped 13 second-half shots and made one save in the overtime period before stopping all five players he faced in the shootout. Slukynsky finished the weekend with 29 saves on 31 shots.

Oden Eliason and Dawson Jenson, both from Rogers, scored in the first half for Section 8, while Lucas Miller (Wayzata) and Jake Fisher (Cretin-Derham Hall) had the first-half goals for Section 6.

Fifth place: Greenway's Gilbeau makes 16 second-half saves as Section 7 skates to 2-1 win over Section 4

Derek Gibeau (Greenway) made 16 saves in a scoreless second half as Section 7 held on for a 2-1 win against Section 4 in the fifth-place game.

Gibeau, who finished the tournament with 30 saves on 33 shots (.909 save percentage, 2.02 goals against average), stopped several quality Section 4 chances, including a breakaway by White Bear Lake’s Brady Borgestad.

Cooper Conway (Andover) and Kade Kohanski (Hermantown) scored first-half goals for Section 7. Colin Ralph (Gentry Academy) scored for Section 4 to make the score 2-1 at halftime.

Myles Gunderson (Grand Rapids) made 11 saves on 12 first-half shots for Section 7. Alexander Reedy (Stillwater) stopped 14 of 16 shots in the first half and Lucas Schanno (St. Paul Academy) stopped all eight shots he faced in the second half for Section 4.

Seventh place: Hastings' Gelhar scores twice for Section 1 as it cruises to 5-1 win over Section 3

Alex Gelhar (Hastings) scored twice and added an assist — all in the second — half as Section 1 cruised to a 5-1 victory over Section 3 in the seventh-place game.

With the scored tied at 1-1 to start the second half, Gelhar scored both his goals in the opening 4:22 to give Section 1 a 3-1 lead. Kyle Ahlschlager (Waseca) added a breakaway goal to make it 4-1 and Aidan Willis (Lakeville South) completed the scoring.

Section 1 goaltender Jack Hochsprung (Lakeville South) stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first half. Riley Burnett (Mankato East) stopped 15 of 16 first-half shots for District 1.

Section 1’s Tyler Gibson (Rochester Century) and Section 3’s Benjamin Cleary (St. Thomas Academy) traded first-half goals.

Section 3 goaltender Dominic Johnson (Apple Valley) stopped 12 of 13 first-half shots. Gavin Olson (St. Thomas Academy) played the second half and made 23 saves on 27 shots.
