Girls 16 Day 1: Sections 2 & 4 Open Festival With Shutouts

Section 5A/AA takes game 1 with OT winner

In a back-and-forth battle on the scoreboard, Section 5A/AA Gray bookended the scoring for a 4-3 overtime victory over Section 8A/AA Sky Blue.

Section 5A/AA Gray capitalized on an overtime power play, scoring 1 minute 34 seconds into overtime in Friday’s first game of the day at Plymouth Ice Center. Joephine Lang (Breck) fired a shot from the slot into the net for the winner 25 seconds into her team’s first-and-only power play of the game.

Gray’s Bella Shipley (Maple Grove) scored two goals in the game, her first got the scoring started 4:25 into the game on an unassisted goal. Then there was a trio of goal in a little more than a minute. First, Sky Blue tied the game on a Elleana Lebahn (Moorhead) goal. Gray regained the lead 51 seconds later with a goal from Shelby Sandberg (Blaine). But Sky Blue tied it again only 17 seconds after that off Raegen Wurm’s (Buffalo) stick.

The quick flurry left the teams knotted at 2-2 at the end of the first half.

Shipley’s second of the game put Gray in front for a third time, only 41 seconds into the second half. Sky Blue tied things up one more time thanks to Sophie Johnson (Warroad) at the 12:54 mark.

Six different players recorded assists for Gray, while five different players assists on the three Sky Blue goals.

Gray moves onto the semifinals to face the winner of the Section 1A/AA and 6A/AA game.

Section 1A/AA uses fast start to grab lead, victory over Section 6A/AA

The second of two early goals in the first 1:26 of the game held up as the game-winner in a 4-1 victory for Section 1A/AA Navy Blue over Section 6A/AA White.

Navy Blue grabbed an early 2-0 lead with goals 14 seconds apart from Ava Stanchina (Northfield) and Delaney Fleming (Stattuck-St. Mary’s). Goaltender Genevieve Klein (Shattuck-St. Mary’s) assisted on the first goal.

The two teams skated for a long period without a stoppage in play in the first half though the score remained the same. After some offensive-zone pressure later in the period, White tipped a puck in front to make it a 2-1 game with a goal from Sophia Quinn (Wilmar) assisted by Kaitlin Roberts (Edina) and Lauren Zawoyski (Edina) with 3:44 left in the first half.

Navy Blue made it a two-goal lead once again, going ahead 3-1 in the final minute of the first half on a tally from Grace McCoshen (Northfield).

Fleming got on the scoresheet again when she added on to the Navy Blue total with under six minutes to play in the game to make it 4-1.

Stanchina finished the game with a goal and two assists.

Section 1A/AA moves on in the championship bracket to face Section 5A/AA Gray on Saturday.

Section 4A/AA Orange coasts to shutout win

Section 4A/AA Orange spread the scoring around as it shut out Section 3A/AA Red 6-0 in Friday’s game at Plymouth Ice Center.

Five different scorers found the back of the net for Orange, which scored three goals in each half. Lily Fetch (East Ridge) led the way with a pair of goals. Riley Reeves (Gentry Academy) and Anna Jerylo (Hill-Murray) each had two assists in the game.  

Orange took a 1-0 lead 1 minute, 42 seconds into the game and never really looked back. Alexa Hanrahan (Gentry Academy) got the scoring started, with Reeves notching her first assist of the game. A few minutes later, Fetch scored her first goal of the game off the rush and help from Jerylo. Reeves connected with Grace Delmonico (Gentry Academy) for a 3-0 lead with about 10 minutes left in the first half.

The score stayed the same until an Elisabeth Sarauer (White Bear Lake) goal at 13:30 of the second half. Hanrahan added to an assist to her game on the play. Late in the second half in a span of 2:34, Orange added two more goals. First, it was Fetch with her second tally, this one from Ellah Hause (Hill-Murray). That was followed by Campbell Heger (Gentry Academy) getting on the board at 20:42 with Jerylo and Ella Tuccitto (Simley) assisting.

Annika Limpert (East Ridge) played the first half in net for Orange, while Lily Timmons (Stillwater) took over in the second half for the combined shutout.

Orange will play in the semifinals Saturday morning against either 2A/AA yellow or 7A/AA Green.

Section 2A/AA Cruises to 5-0 Win Over Section 7A/AA

Sporting gold jerseys, Section 2 shined in their opening game of the Girls 16 Spring Festival as five different players scored goals and three players had multi-point efforts. 

Minnetonka teammates Lindzi Avar and Grace Sadura bookended the scoring for Section 2. Avar opened the scoring in the first half on a feed from Sadura, and then Avar assisted on Sadura's power play goal late in the second half. 

Jana Lesch (Bloomington Jefferson), Molly Ryan (Minnetonka) and Sydney Leonard (Mound Westonka) also scored for Section 2, who controlled most of the game and outshot Section 7 heavily.

Sedona Blair (Holy Family) and Madeleine Margraf (Chaska Chanhassen) combined to make 13 saves for the shutout.
