Section 8 proves great as White team shuts out the light's Friday night with 9-3 rally over Green 5

The White Jerseys from Section 8 came to play Friday night at the Plymouth Ice Center, scoring 9 goals in their quarterfinal defeat of the Section 3 Green Squad at the CCM High Performance 17 festival.

A 3-2 halftime lead went the way of the state’s northwestern playmakers in the second half, whose finishing touches on an opportunistic efforts saw the White jerseys regularly light the lamp on Rink B.

Sophomore Jackson Panzer, a North Dakota recruit from East Grand Forks, finished with a hat trick and Gavin Lumberg, a junior forward from Moorhead co-led all scorers with two goals and four points. Also pouring in four points was Lumberg’s Spuds teammate Carson Triggs, who added a goal and three helpers to lead the way with eight collective points in the White 8A/AA team’s 24 points in the successful Friday start.

After Section 3 Greens leveled the score barely a minute into the second half at 3-3, White 8s  turned loose a torrent of six unanswered goals to help ease into the semifinal round with stats in pocket. Moorhead had its black and orange-hands all over the effort with six contributing players. St. Michael-Albertville also brings six, and was led Friday evening by 6-foot-1 junior forward Maxwell Taylor, and

White net minder Brent Holmer, a 6-foot junior from Thief River Falls proved the most successful in keeping pucks out of his net. Holmer made nine saves on 10 shots during the second half, allowing just one in a game that saw 12 cellys,

White 8 team advances to the semifinal round and a meeting with 5A/AA SkyBlue team. Despite being outshot 43-21 for the game by Gold Section 7, SkyBlue buried its chances much like the White squad was able to. A semifinal meeting at 12:15 p.m. on Rink C at PIC could make a finesse track meet where the team that is able to move the puck and finish a little better will advance. Both teams have speed and both teams can score.

B17: Outshot but not undone, Sky Blue 5 skates past determined Gold 7s

Late charge and heavy shot advantage not enough for Gold (Section 7) as big first half carries SkyBlue (Section 5) to 7-4 victory. Landen Gunderson (Maple Grove) nets two goals and four points to help lead SkyBlue. Final shots favor Gold 43-21.

A spirited second half and a significant advantage in shots were not enough to push Gold (Section 7) towards catching SkyBlue (Section 5) as SkyBlue skated into Saturday’s semifinal with a 7-4 victory.

Orange from Section 2 scored twice in the second half to pull away from the Reds from Section 1 and take a 3-1 victory into Saturday’s semifinal round.

Sam Rinzel (Chaska) also tallied an assist on Schumacher’s goal.

It followed a tight first half where Orange broke the ice 9:15 in on a score by William Brown (Delano), only to see Red answer about 90 seconds later when Gavin Brunmeier (Mankato West) produced the equalizer.

JOHNSON'S LATE HEROICS LIFT GRAY SECTION 6 PAST SECTION 4'S ROYAL BLUE VIA 3-2 FINAL

A late score by Willy Johnson (Edina) proved the difference-maker in the day’s opening game and lifted the Grays from Section 6 to a narrow 3-2 win over the Royal Blues from Section 4.

Five different goal scorers made their mark on the sheet, and 11 tallied a single point with well-spread scoring production on both sides.

Blue goalie Ben Dardis (Mahtomedi) tallied 25 saves on 27 shots in the first half, and finished with more stops than the other three goalies combined. Gray goalie Cade Chapman (Rogers) stopped all eight shots he faced in the second half to keep a lid on the Blues and preserve the victory.

Final shots favored the Grays 38-15.

The Grays advance to Saturday’s semifinal meeting with the Orange squad from Section 2. Puck drop is 10:15 a.m. on Plymouth Ice Center’s Rink C.
