Earlier this month, the 11 NCAA Division I hockey conferences announced the establishment of a new initiative, College Hockey for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. The initiative’s primary focus will be on creating positive cultural change across our sport through communication, education, allyship, and advocacy.

Formed in the summer of 2020, a committee of 27 NCAA Division I players, coaches and administrators, including five Minnesota natives, have been meeting, seeking ideas and proposals to bring about the change they desire.

“There’s a lot that we want to accomplish and we know it’s not going to be an easy task,” said Tina Kampa, in an interview with Bemidji State Athletics. “But ultimately our goal is to make hockey for everyone so that they can enjoy the game as much as we do.”

Kampa, who grew up playing hockey in Maple Grove and is in her senior season at Bemidji State University, will join Robbie Stucker (St. Paul, MN/University of Minnesota) and Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, MN/University of New Hampshire) as three of the 12 student athletes on the committee. Mike Snee (Duluth, MN), the Executive Director of College Hockey Inc., and NCHC Commissioner Josh Fenton (Litchfield, MN) will also serve on the committee as they look for ways college hockey help make the game more welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
