With Governor Walz expected to address the current pause on youth sports later this week, Minnesota Hockey would like to provide an update to its members regarding efforts to safely resume hockey activities starting December 19.

  • Minnesota Hockey has hosted numerous internal meetings over the previous weeks, as well as with the Minnesota Ice Arena Managers Association (MIAMA), to examine, revise and update protocols.
  • On Friday, December 3, these updated protocols were proposed to Commissioner Tarek Tomes, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission (MASC). An additional meeting will be held this week in advance of the Governor’s announcement.
  • We will be meeting with MDH on Thursday, December 10 to discuss other mitigation strategies outside of the proposed protocols.
  • We have also met with representatives from other winter sports in an effort to have a unified approach to returning athletes to competition safely and provide them the social, emotional and mental health benefits of participating in sports while minimizing risk to other members of our communities.
  • Minnesota Hockey’s Program Manager, Mike Terwilliger, has been given the added responsibility of COVID-19 Coordinator for the organization and will be coordinating ongoing communication between the Department of Health and associations.

We will continue to do all we can to get our members back on the ice safely. When that happens, things may look different, but it will be important we all follow the new protocols in place so that we can keep hockey going for the remainder of the season.
