Does your son or daughter love the game of hockey and always want to be at the rink? Do you know a former player looking for a way to get involved with the game again? Or maybe you’re a current or former official who hasn’t registered yet?

The time is now to sign up as an official for the 2020-21 hockey season!

With statewide excitement about hockey’s return this fall and a growing need for officials thanks to the steady growth of the game, there has never been a more important time to join the officiating ranks. The Minnesota Hockey Officials Association (MHOA) and USA Hockey Officiating Education Program have started their training programs for the 2020-21 season, and officials are encouraged to start the process now so they’re ready for the year as games begin in the next couple of weeks.

Below are the core requirements for officials as well as a few new initiatives to ensure the safety and support of officials:

NEW for 2020-21

  • All classroom seminars will be held virtually this season. Virtual seminars dates and times are posted here.
  • For this season only, the closed book exam will be conducted virtually, but officials will have a limited time frame to complete the exam.
  • MHOA will be adding a shadow program and encouraging local officials’ associations to enhance their mentoring efforts with the absence of on-ice training typically completed during classroom seminars.

Certification Process

USA Hockey and MHOA take great pride in setting the standard for training youth sports officials and ensuring every official has the knowledge and confidence to make the necessary calls on the ice to provide a safe and enjoyable hockey experience for everyone involved.

Please note the requirements below, including fees, minimum exam scores and modules, may vary depending on the desired level of certification.
