Equipment Grant Program Returns for Tenth Season

Minnesota Hockey, in partnership with DICK’S Sporting Goods, today announced applications are open for the Gear Up Minnesota equipment grant program. Now in its tenth season, the Gear Up Minnesota program is designed to make hockey more affordable and accessible for families by outfitting young hockey players throughout the state.

“We are very excited to offer this program again this year and extremely thankful for the continued support of DICK’S Sporting Goods, especially during this challenging time,” said Minnesota Hockey President Steve Oleheiser. “This program has played such a major role in helping our associations grow hockey in their communities over the past ten years. We couldn’t be prouder of the impact it has had, and we look forward to welcoming even more young athletes into our amazing hockey culture in Minnesota.”

The Gear Up Minnesota program was initially launched during the 2010-11 season and has become one of Minnesota's most successful growth initiatives, helping to increase the amount of Minnesota’s 8 & Under players by nearly 1,900 players (11%) over the past decade. The program has made an impact statewide as grants have been distributed to over 130 of the 145 Minnesota Hockey community associations.

Grant recipients will be provided with gift cards to purchase the equipment most needed by associations, courtesy of DICK’S Sporting Goods. This can include skates, sticks or any other hockey gear they deem necessary.

Associations can now apply for the 2020 Gear Up Minnesota grant by submitting an application online. Applications will request insight on what growth initiatives associations are planning, what equipment is most needed and how the equipment will be used. The application process will be open now through August 10. Associations that earn grants will be notified in August and will receive their gift cards in September. Gift cards can be used to purchase equipment online, or at any of the eight DICK’S Sporting Goods locations in Minnesota.

DICK’S Sporting Goods will also host two separate shop event weekends for Minnesota Hockey participants in mid-September and mid-October at all Minnesota Dick’s Sporting Goods locations.  Purchases made during these events will receive a 20% discount.

Minnesota would like to extend a special thank you to Dick's Sporting Goods, the Minnesota Wild Foundation, Jimmy John's, FlipGive and our other partners for making Gear Up Minnesota a success.
