All sessions are developed to last one hour but can be adapted to fit any association needs. The only cost to Minnesota Hockey Youth Hockey Associations is the ice time. Instructor fees, handouts, meals and mileage are all covered by Minnesota Hockey. On Ice sessions use a group of 8-10 skaters as demonstrators and the coaches participating in the drills (except checking clinics). Fundamental of Skating (Focus on Mite, Squirt and PeeWee Age Groups)
The fundamentals of skating: stance, balance, stride, weight shift and edge work along with
The Program emphasizes agility and speed acceleration, change of pace, pivots forward and backwards, crossovers and crossunders and change of direction.
For the M/S group the focus is primarily developing the skills to control the puck: wide and short dribbling, and maneuvering with the puck.
For the PW/B Group the focus is acceleration and maneuvering at full speed with the puck, attacking the defenseman and puck protection techniques.
The focus of this program is to orient players to contact confidence when gaining position to and fighting for control of the puck, safely playing along the boards, angling and how to effectively and legally use body contact without penalty.
Body Checking (appropriate for PW/Bantam Groups)
The focus of this program is to orient players to playing in situations of full body contact. The concepts of contact confidence and playing safely along the boards will be reviewed as well as how to effectively protect yourself while taking a check and giving a legal body check. Body checking skills will be developed while angling, back checking and “coverage situations”.
All Programs have been developed with one hour of classroom time to explain the program and one hour of ice time with 8-10 demonstrators to allow coaches to see how the skills can be developed.
Two Team Shared Ice Practices (Squirts and Above)
This session focuses on the advantages that two teams can have planning and sharing the time they have with one other team. Topics include: Creating Competitive Situations, and Effective Use of the Ice Surface.
This sessions focus on effective use of ice time with the purpose of developing skills. Small groups and maximizing repetitions that each player receives.
