Six Minnesota Teams Advance to Nationals

Six Minnesota teams have earned berths in the 2020 USA Hockey National Championships over the past week. Two teams from the Upper Midwest High School Girls Elite League advanced to the Girls 16U and Girls 19U Tier I Nationals, which will be held in Blaine, MN, and four teams advanced to Tier II and High School National Championships.

Girls 16U Tier I – After falling behind 2-0 and 3-2 in the opening period, Girls Elite Grey took over the rest of the game, claiming a 6-4 victory over Girls Elite Black. Madison Gaberding, Danielle Burgen and Carly Lancaster each had two points for Girls Elite Grey.

Girls 19U Tier I – Josephine Bothun posted a 33-save shutout, including 16 saves in the final period, to lead Girls Elite Black to a 2-0 victory over Girls Elite White. Olivia Mobley and Abelaide Burton each tallied a goal. 

Girls 16U Tier IIPremier Prep Teal jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first four minutes. Premier Prep Gold evened the score with a two-goal burst of their own, but Isabel Burt scored the eventual game winner and Premier Prep Teal added an empty net goal to seal a 4-2 win. They will advance to the Girls Tier II Nationals Championships in Pennsylvania.

Girls 19U Tier II – Despite controlling large stretches of the first and second period, Dynamo Yellow trailed 1-0 to Premier Prep Grey until Zoe Chadwick tied the game midway through the third period. After a scoreless overtime, Allison Urlaub delivered the game winning goal for Dynamo Yellow in the sixth round of the shootout. The win qualified Dynamo Yellow for the Girls Tier II National Championships in April 2020.

Girls High School – A power play goal by Justice Ranbaum late in the third period sent the Minnesota District Final between Premier Prep Royal and Dynamo Sky Blue to overtime, where Jordan Juers scored for Premier Prep Royal to secure a 2-1 win. Premier Prep Royal will advance to the Girls High School National Championships in Texas.

Youth 18U Tier II – The Voyageurs, led by Cole Avery who tallied four assists, scored early and often in an 8-1 win in the Youth HP 18 Fall League and District Championship. The Voyageurs will advance to the Youth Tier II 18U National Championships in California.

Minnesota will send two more teams to the National Championships with two more District Championship games later this fall. The Youth 16U champion will be decided on November 5 at the Super Rink. The Youth 18U playoffs are to be determined.
