Day 3 shifts the focus to off-ice work including stretching, conditioning and weightlifting.
Day 3 began with a goaltenders only practice in the early morning. The focus of day three included dryland training at Husky Stadium and weight training at the arena. The teams also took to the diamond to play rag ball on a gorgeous Minnesota summer day. Inside, the standings continued to take shape in the third round of games.
We saw the most defensive-minded game to date as Red and White ended in a 1-1 tie. The two teams played to the first scoreless opening period of the week, with Red having the best chance and clanking the iron late in the half.
Red took the lead 6:54 into the second half, but white leveled the score 1-1 with 6:40 to play. Neither team scored with the man advantage, with Red going 0-3 and White 0-2. Both goalies played well with 18 saves on 19 shots in the second half. White has yet to win a game, but they haven't lost either in collecting three points from three ties.
Teams White and Red kicked off Day 3 with a 1-1 tie.
Green continues to roll as they picked up their third win in a row. Green took a 2-0 lead on two goals just over one minute apart in the first half. They would carry a three-goal lead into the intermission, but Light Blue got on the board 4:30 into the second half. Green sealed the win with a fourth goal with about four minutes to play.
Green went 1-for-4 on the power play, and killed off both chances for Light Blue. Green outshot Light Blue 40-28 in the win. Green has scored 10 goals in the first half of its three games, only one other team has more than three (Gold with seven).
Team Green on the attack in its game against Team Light Blue. Green improved to 3-0-0 with the 4-1 win.
Teams Royal Blue and Gold played the nightcap on Monday night.
Gold took an early lead with 17:47 remaining in the first half, but royal Blue took command soon after. Royal tied the game with 14:59 to go in the half, and struck three more times in the period to take a 4-1 lead. Gold answered to cut the deficit to two goals with 1:05 left in the frame.
The second period saw much less action, with Royal scoring the only goal early in the period with 20:46 to play. Gold went 0-for-3 on the power play and Royal went 0-for-2. Royal outshot Gold 30-23.
We still have three undefeated teams, and also three winless teams. One of those teams happens to belong to both categories!
There seems to be three tiers of teams developing, but with two round robin opponents to go there is still opportunities to move yourself up a tier. Royal Blue and Red will play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. with a big chance for Red to move into the top two, but also a chance for Royal to solidify its spot in the championship game. Gold and Light Blue play at 1:45 p.m. giving both teams a crucial shot at two points. Finally, Green will try to make it four in a row against White, a team that has not won or lost a game yet! See you tomorrow from St. Cloud.
