Summer Program Will Focus on Introducing Hockey Skills to New Players Age 9-12

St. Paul, MN – June 5, 2019 – Minnesota Hockey, in partnership with the Minnesota Wild and the Minnesota Wild Foundation, are excited to introduce the first “Never Too Late” Hockey Camp. The “Never Too Late” Camp will serve as a low-cost Learn to Play camp for kids age 9 – 12, who are interested in hockey, but have not yet played organized hockey. The camp will be held at HealthEast Sports Center in Woodbury and is designed to provide skating and hockey skills work for players who may want to get into organized hockey for the 2019-2020 season.

The camp will start on July 8 and end on July 31 and feature eight sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 - 7 p.m. Coaching will be led by Minnesota Hockey ADM coordinator and Woodbury Boys High School coach, Wes Bolin, with assistance from coaches of the Minnesota Hockey Player Development Team.

In addition to eight hours of ice time, camp attendees will receive a jersey and be provided with any equipment needed for the duration of camp. Should a player wish to sign up for hockey for the upcoming season, he or she would be allowed to purchase the equipment at a discounted rate.

“We often hear questions from parents about how their child has expressed interest in playing hockey, but they fear they are too old to start, and too far behind players who have been playing since ages four to eight,” said Minnesota Hockey Executive Director Glen Andresen. “Our typical response has been to refer them to the Minnesota Hockey Rec League, which is our fastest growing program and offers hockey at a low cost and low time commitment. The goal of the Never Too Late camp is to give kids sufficient time to build the necessary skills so they can enter hockey and feel confident enough in their abilities that they will be able to join an organized team and fit right in, whether that be the Rec League or association hockey.”

Registration for the “Never Too Late Camp,” which costs $89 per player, can be found here. The camp will need a minimum of 10 registrants by June 28, and will be capped at 40 participants in total. Minnesota Hockey will be exploring additional “Never Too Late” Camps at various times throughout the year, and at various locations throughout the state.

“We are excited to support this new program and provide more children with an opportunity to try and play the great sport of hockey,” said Minnesota Wild President Matt Majka.
