Minnesota Teams Gear Up For USA Hockey Tier I & Tier II National Championships

District 10 Green Giants Team Looking To Defend 14U National Championship

St. Paul, MN – April 2, 2019 – Two teams from the CCM Minnesota Hockey High Performance Tier 1 Leagues will be vying for titles at the USA Hockey National Championships, which kick off this Wednesday, April 3. Among the teams participating will be the District 10 Green Giants Girls 14U team, which will look to remain undefeated (18-0-0) and repeat as national champions. The Green Giants will kick off pool play on Thursday at 7:15 PM Central time in Irvine, Calif. with a matchup against the Washington Pride.

The Minnesota District will also be represented by the District 10 Green Giants in the Youth 15 classification. This will mark the second trip to Nationals in three years for the Green Giants 15 team, who earned their bid with a 5-3 victory over Shattuck-St. Mary’s on October 7 at the Plymouth Ice Center in the Minnesota District championship game. The Green Giants will open up play on Wednesday in Plymouth, Mich. against the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies at 1:00 PM Central time. Shattuck-St. Mary’s 15 team earned an at large bid and will face the Cape Cod Whalers on Wednesday at 3:00 PM.

The Minnesota District will also be represented in several other Youth and Girls Tier 1 classifications. At the Girls 16U Tier 1 Nationals in Irvine, Minnesota Elite Gray of the Upper Midwest High School Girls Elite League will enter as Minnesota District champions. Shattuck-St. Mary’s will also participate as an at large bid in that tournament. Shattuck will also be sending a team to the Girls 19U Nationals, as well as Youth 14U, Youth 16U and Youth 18U Nationals.  

The Tier II National Championships will also take place this weekend, and Minnesota will be represented at the Tier II Youth 18U in San Jose, California by the Minnesota Moose and the Tier II Girls 19U in Amhest, New York by the Minnesota Premier Prep Red team. 

Two Minnesota teams also participated in the USA Hockey High School National Championships this past weekend. Edina’s Junior Gold A team, finished as the runner-up in the Boys Division I and the Dynamo Black team finished as the runner-up in the Girls Division.

Minnesota Hockey’s Tier I structure and the CCM High Performance Tier 1 Leagues were established in 2016 to enhance Minnesota’s community-based association and high school model by bringing together the most talented players from all over Minnesota for highly competitive League play and providing a path to compete in the USA Hockey Tier 1 National Championships. The Fall Tier 1 schedule allows participants to play for their association or high school team.

Registration for the 2019 Tier I 16U (2003 birth year), 15 (2004 birth year) and 14U (2005 & 2006 birth years) Fall Leagues will open April 10th following the conclusion of the USA Hockey Tier 1 National Championships.
