CCM HP Girls 16: Day 1 Recap

Section 3A/AA - 3, Section 8A/AA - 2

Section 3 hustled to a three-goal lead in the first half and then held on for a 3-2 win over Section 8 in the opening game of the weekend. Emily Cronkhite (Eagan) opened the scoring eight minutes into the game and then added her second of the game after a goal by Mikayla Kelley (Eastview) to make it 3-0. CJ Mack (East Grand Forks) closed the gap for Section 8 to two goals with just before the intermission. Then, Kelly Carriere (Sartell-Sauk Rapids) found the twine midway through the second half to make it a one goal game. Section 3 held on though for a 3-2 win.

Section 1A/AA - 4 (SO), Section 6A/AA - 3

Carly Lancaster (Farmington) helped Section 1 edge Section 6 in a shootout 4-3, capping an exciting, back-and-forth match-up.  Three times over the course of the game Section 6 earned a one-goal lead, but each time Section 1, led by Shelbi Guttormson (Shattuck-St. Mary's) who had two goals and an assist, responded with the next goal to tie it up. After a scoreless overtime, the teams faced off in a shootout where Lancaster came up with the only goal, advancing her squad to the semifinals.

Section 5A/AA - 3 (OT), Section 4A/AA - 2

Julia Stevens (Minneapolis) put Section 5 on the board first, scoring just over a minute to the game. Section 4 responded later in the first half though with goals by Aveline Bullert (Mounds View) and Ella Reynolds (South St. Paul) about 90 seconds apart to make it 2-1 in their favor at the end of the first half. Samantha Stelljes (Maple Grove) came up big late in the game though as she scored the game tying goal in the second half and then assisted on the game winner by Emma Rooks (Rogers) in overtime to give Section 5 a 3-2 win.

Section 2A/AA - 3, Section 7A/AA - 2

The goaltending duo of Alex Pellicci (Holy Family) and Molly Goergen (Eden Prairie) backstopped Section 2 to a 3-2 win over Section 7 in the final game of the day. Grace Kuipers (Eden Prairie) put Section 2 on top in the first half, but it was Section 7 who controlled most of play. In the second half, Section 7 cranked up the pressure even more and broke through with goals by Gabby Krause (Andover) and Hailey Winklesky (Proctor-Hermantown) to earn a 2-1 lead, but it wasn't enough. Hayley Crawford (Minnetonka) evened the game at 2-2 with just over three minutes left to play and Kailey Niccum (Mound Westonka) buried the game winner with eight second left on the clock to give Section 2 the 3-2 win. Pellicci and Goergen combined to make 35 saves as Section 7 outshot Section 2 by a margin of 37-17.
